#2794 [0.11.2] Jesuit missionary refuses to establish a mission
Open the attached savegame, cycle units to the missionary south of Tetonwan, and move north to establish a mission. Instead of doing that, the missionary attempts to live among the natives, reporting he has nothing to learn. I believe this was a Jesuit missionary that was trained in one of my universities, so maybe some flags on the unit were not set/removed.
What version of FreeCol are you running? A release or trunk? I so infrequently train missionaries, that this would take a bit to test, but it seems easy to replicate if missionaries trained in a colony aren't able to create missions.
Do you know if this applies to non-Jesuit missionaries commissioned by the colony?
Not a bug. The Jesuit Missionary unit is not commissioned as a missionary, or more precisely, the unit does not have the missionary role, it only has the default "nothing-special" role. Therefore FreeCol is correct to not allow it to found a mission. The role is shown visually by the unit not having a hat. Commissioning as a missionary/assigning missionary role can be done in a church, cathedral or Europe.
I understand that it is confusing that the unit type "Jesuit Missionary" includes the word "missionary", but this does not mean that the unit can always undertake a missionary action. However this is Col1 behaviour, so we are stuck with it. At least there is some consistency, it is the same situation as with a "Hardy Pioneer" unit without tools not being able to perform pioneering tasks.
There is a simple mitigation here. In git.277d9ce I have increased the amount of detail given about the unit in the info-panel (lower right corner of the screen), such that it now shows "Jesuit Missionary (not commissioned)", and once commissioned: "Jesuit Missionary (1 Bible)".
I will close this report soon unless there is further fallout.
That makes now that I think about it. I've never really thought about having a missionary that is not commissioned as one (in FreeCol without a Bible).
Mike Pope - okay, sorry, that makes sense, I was not aware of this distinction, that missionaries must be specifically assigned the missionary role.
Calebrw - I always state the version my report relates to in the square parentheses in the beginning of the subject of the bug report to avoid confusion. In this case, [0.11.2]
