I've been trying to use equalizer apo for a few days now, trying to make my mic louder so my friends can hear me better. But even with having the correct device selected, there has been no change in volume when changing the preamp amount

As it concerns a mic there are a few things you could try. But first, was the Device Selector (the app that pops up during installation) successfully gone through the test after you have installed Equalizer APO on your mic?

Commonly that's about 2 things. Either the app you use for recording/streaming uses the mic in exclusive mode bypassing any APO (audio processing object like Equalizer APO). Or the automatically selected APO techniques (APO = sound enhancement/effect) isn't the right one.

The first issue is prevented by unchecking some exclusive mode checkboxes as seen on the attached screenshot. If the second issue, start the Device Selector, select your mic, click the troubleshooting options checkbox and try another APO technique as available in the "Install as ...." dropdown box. So select another one and click the "Ok" button to invoke it.

I tried both things you suggested and my mic is still quiet

That's unfortunately. Is your mic a Bluetooth one (of a Bluetooth headset)?
