Yes, it could be a Windows 11 issue. It could also be that Equalizer APO doesn't have enough rights for installation. Or that some antivirus/firewall app is preventing the installation.

Try to run the setup with full administrator rights. Also it might be that some next Windows 11 update things starts working again.

That's unfortunate. Perhaps the next Windows 11 update things start working. In principle the Audio Processing Objects system in Windows 10 will be exactly the same in Windows 11. But Microsoft is still tinkering away, causing Equalizer APO (or any APO, sound enhancement) to fail. It's quite annoying as they did this for Windows 10 too.

Yeh, I'm seeing about the same. EqualizerAPO installs, but it has no effect whatever. I also installed the PC Equalizer Free GUI .. and it comes up, but ... nothing. I'm wondering if Windows 11 audio just doesn't support it.

Microsoft might disable the Audio Processing Objects (APO's) system in some updates and enable it in the next. This happened quite a few times when Microsoft introduced, well rather forced upon us, Windows 10. I'm guessing it's a waiting game and/or trying some troubleshooting options.

Btw. If Equalizer APO isn't working none of the interfaces including PC Equalizer, Peace, HeSuVi, etc. will work. All uses Equalizer APO (its audio changing engine).

Thank you. I'm going to guess that when it becomes known to be working on Windows 11 pretty well, that fact will be noted on the download page. I'll wait to see that before trying again. ;-)

FWIW, Equalizer APO works perfectly fine for me on Windows 11.

However, I did notice that Equalizer APO seems to struggle with some combinations of FxProperties. I suspect that might be because of new properties that affects APO operation and that EAPO does not understand. I haven't looked too closely though. Also, to be fair, I've seen this problem on Windows 10 as well.

The way to get rid of that problem is to completely reset FxProperties and restart from scratch:

    1. In the Equalizer APO configuration, click "Copy Device command to clipboard", then remove Equalizer APO from the device. Close the Configurator. Do not reboot.
    2. Paste the clipboard in Notepad or whatever. Note the audio endpoint GUID (e.g. {97da8632-2ba2-4c33-ac9f-3dba7e1dfde4}).
    3. Open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\{GUID}". Rename the "FxProperties" key to disable it. (Note you might have to mess with registry permissions before you can do that.)
    4. Go back to the Equalizer APO configurator, and enable Equalizer APO as usual.

Great workaround! You could be right in saying that Windows 11 introduces some new keys and/or features in the Audio Processing Objects (APO's) architecture. Equalizer APO is made for Windows Vista up till 8.1 so by saying it can be an issue on Windows 10 you're probably right. For instance, on almost a daily basis I need to guide people to SFX/EFX or SFX/MFX, the Windows 10 and 11 way of APO's.

I do wonder if your solution isn't basically the same as unchecking the "Use original APO" checkboxes of the troubleshooting options of an audio device (and restart the computer). Have you tested this possibility?

I really haven't investigated this issue very closely, but my recollection is that I tried that approach - it's not equivalent. My understanding is that Equalizer APO tries to be careful not to touch anything in FxProperties it does not understand. The unfortunate end result is that it might be leaving some properties in there that could cause actual problems.

I might be wrong though - I think someone would need to take a close look at the latest Microsoft APO docs for the new FxProperties, as well as the Configurator code, to determine where problems may arise and maybe make the EAPO setup code more robust.

Perhaps the problem arises when dealing with SFX/EFX and SFX/MFX. Although I'm not good at c++ I could take a look at the code of the Configurator to see how things are done. And if the Microsoft docs have a different approach. My gut feeling says that you're right in your assessment but it remains to be seen. I've contemplated to create my own Configurator but it's a daunting prospect considering at my poor c++ skills.
