mp3 format is quite lossy. I would recommend ogg/vorbis (.ogg file extension) to save space with good quality or .wav to have the best quality with no compression

While the game is mostly working for me at this point, I find that even with the wail32.dll replaced that the sound effects option is greyed out using the most recently provided .dxw file for the game. Naturally, no sound effects play. It sounds like other people don't have that issue. Did I download the wrong DLL? (Seems like compatibility mode would conflict with the way the dxw is set up having tried that, so that's not the solution)
The wail32.dll I have has the following checksums:
CRC32: 2A48D643
MD5: 4234B0645D84CDE39F6D558D08B390FA
SHA-1: 6EB6593F24EE326C84D6D024593FC638F874B9F8

OK, I think my issue was tied to the registry settings -- I think that having tried to run the program from windows without the dxw wrappers added stuff to the registry that was causing a conflict. Removing those keys and having both emulate and override registry settings for the game on were enough to fix the issue. Now sound works.

Here is the guide to get it working properly: https://www.speedrun.com/pitfall_the_mayan_adventure/guides/r7kf9. Then, CD is not needed and the music is looping, error prompts are also gone. If you keep both CD music and ambient music ticked (because registry tweak did that), only ambient will be used, I noticed that CD music has ambient present in itself, so basically you want only CD music ticked. If you also combine it with WindowedBorderlessGaming program, you can have fullscreen borderless window.
