I am personally not happy with Debian and Redhat config systems. I think you should do the most intuitive or obvious thing. Whatever is easiest to explain in a FAQ, or guess even. Given my druthers, all the processes would be kicked off by Perl. The configs would be stored in complex structures... but I am dreaming again. --- Friedrich Lobenstock <fl...@fl...> wrote: > Heiko Zuerker wrote: > > > > I'm not sure if we should put some stuff in a ./network subdirectory, I > > would rather rename /etc/sysconfig/nic to network. Hi!
I do want to split up /etc/sysconfig/config into the following files
each containing a part of the original file:
* /etc/sysconfig/kernel
# which modules should be loaded in the initial ramdisk
# seperate by space
#INITRD_MODULES="BusLogic aic7xxx 3w-xxxx"
INITRD_MODULES=""
* /etc/sysconfig/security
# debug file permission setting?
# writes log to /tmp/permissions.log
SET_FILE_PERM_DEBUG=no
* /etc/sysconfig/jail
# use the chroot jails?
JAIL_ENABLE=yes
# where to create the chroot jails
# !!! DO NOT CHANGE THIS PATH !!!
JAIL_DIR=/jail
* /etc/sysconfig/network (should propably be /etc/sysconfig/network/config)
HOSTNAME=Devil
DOMAIN=devil-linux.org
#DEFAULTGATEWAY=10.90.1.1
#DEFAULTGATEWAY_IF=eth0
# enable routing -> yes/no
START_ROUTING=yes
# Start the firewall script -> yes/no
START_FIREWALL=yes
# Disable ECN (early congestion notification)
DISABLE_ECN=yes
* /etc/sysconfig/syslog
# which syslog daemon?
# options: syslog-ng syslogd
SYSLOG_DAEMON=syslog-ng
# additional parameters for syslogd
SYSLOGD_PARAM=
# log level for klogd
KERNEL_LOGLEVEL=2
* /etc/sysconfig/keyboard
# name of keyboard layout to be loaded
# e.g. us or de-latin1
KEYBOARD_LAYOUT="us"
#KEYBOARD_LAYOUT="de-latin1"
* /etc/sysconfig/clock
# timezone
TIMEZONE="US/Eastern"
#TIMEZONE="MET"
# set if local clock has time in UTC
UTC=0
New files would propably be
* /etc/sysconfig/services
...containig the START_PACKAGE stuff
* /etc/sysconfig/dhcpcd (should propably be /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp)
* /etc/sysconfig/zebra
* ....
The following files would not change
* /etc/sysconfig/software
* /etc/sysconfig/domino
* /etc/sysconfig/permissions.base (for now)
Comments? Objections? If I don't hear anything in a few days I
take it as a yes from your side.

But Friedl had a pretty good idea, here is his email from the mailing list: Ok, then why don't we add the routing entries to the /etc/sysconfig/nic/ files? Eg: /etc/sysconfig/nic/ifcfg-eth0 DHCP=no #DHCP=yes #DHCP=server ONBOOT=yes DEVICE=eth0 IP=10.90.1.200 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 #BROADCAST=10.90.1.255 MODULE=pcnet32 Suggested additions: DHCP=no #DHCP=yes #DHCP=server ONBOOT=yes DEVICE=eth0 IP=10.90.1.200 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 #BROADCAST=10.90.1.255 MODULE=pcnet32 DEFAULT=10.90.1.1 NETWORKS="10.90.2.0/24 10.1.0.0/16:10.90.1.30" This would produce (just from my mind, but it should work this way): # LANG=en netstat -rn Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 10.90.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 10.90.2.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 10.1.0.0 10.90.1.30 255.255.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 10.90.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 That should be all we need, shouldn't it? BTW someone please read the LSB if they have something to say about this matter. -- MfG / Regards Friedrich Lobenstock ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Heiko Zuerker (smiley73) Date: 2002-04-11 17:43 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=112133 Arne provided a running script. This email is to inform you about the release of version '2.01a09' of 'cdrtools' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/cdrecord/ The changes in this release are as follows: All publicly known Plextor drive features are now supported (PowerRec, SpeedRead, SingleSession, Hide-CDR, Read Burn-Proof counter) although the corresponding SCSI commands had to be guessed. A new option -setdropts was added to allow cdrecord to set driver-specific options and exit. This version is now starting to support SCSI reset on SCO-UnixWare, fixes the command line parser for driveropts= parameters, includes a new option -lock, and supports DAO for the CW-7501. cdda2wav now works again with broken CD extra disks. mkisofs is now using char translation for 8-bit characters that are used with -iso-level 4 (ISO-9660:1999). Project description: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs with a CDR/CDRW recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. It supports CD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc- and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features include IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD writers. This email is to inform you about the release of version '2.0-pre1' of 'grsecurity' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/grsecurity/ The changes in this release are as follows: Changes include a complete rewrite of the ACL system, which is now role-based. User, group, and special roles are implemented. IP-based roles, role transition tables, and roles requiring no authentication have been added. In addition, non-root users are allowed to authenticate to special roles. Project description: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most forms of address space modification, confines programs with least privilege via its process-based MAC system, hardens syscalls, provides full-featured auditing, and implements many of the OpenBSD randomness features. It was written for performance, ease-of-use, and security. The MAC system has an intelligent learning-mode, and all of grsecurity supports a feature that logs the IP of the attacker that causes an alert or audit. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/grsecurity/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release includes new features from PaX: non-executable and read-only kernel pages for i386, randomization of executable base for Alpha, SPARC, SPARC64, and PA-RISC, and randomization of the stack and mmap bases for PowerPC. gradm has been updated to 1.9.9f.
