Hey, I just finished some changes in the usermanagement of the build system. From now on you just need to use the standard command line user management tools (e.g. useradd, userdel, groupadd, etc.). The build system will later convert everything into the shadow format and copy them into the $ETCDIR/etc folder. Regards Heiko |

This email is to inform you about the release of version '2.03' of 'Syslinux' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/syslinux/ The changes in this release are as follows: This version adds support for several broken PXE stacks, including the rbfg.exe PXE boot floppy from 3Com and Argon Technologies. It also adds support for gzip compressed images in MEMDISK. Project description: SYSLINUX is a boot loader for the Linux operating system which operates off of MS-DOS floppies. It is intended to simplify first-time installation of Linux, rescue disks, and other uses for boot floppies. A SYSLINUX floppy can be manipulated using standard MS-DOS (or any other OS that can access an MS-DOS filesystem) tools once it has been created, and requires only a ~ 9K DOS program or ~ 18K Linux program to create it in the first place. It also includes PXELINUX, a program to boot off a network server using a boot PROM compatible with the Intel PXE (Pre-Execution Environment) specification, ISOLINUX, a program to boot off ISO 9660 CD-ROMs in native mode, and MEMDISK, a tool to boot legacy operating systems (e.g. DOS) using a Linux boot loader regardless of medium. Axsom" <MA...@Te...> To: <he...@de...> Reply-To: <MA...@Te...> Subject: Contribution - Static routes / arp entries Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 12:55:43 -0700 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook CWS, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2911.0) Hi Heiko, After working with devil-linux for a week or so I found it arduous to keep manually entering static routes / arp entries for my DMZ interface. I checked the devil-linux cvs for any updates or solutions and didn't see any so here is a possible solution for your review. I do realize that many people may just add the route / proxy additions to the firewall.rules script however this is less than ideal if you want to use fwbuilder for your rules generation. Most installations static entries / proxy arps won't change while their firewall.rules will which made it more desirable to place these in another script. This is a really simple addition. I made it flexible enough that you can specify a begin and end address for say a whole class c block to listen on your external interface and proxy arp to the dmz interface. It requires two additional scripts and a modification to the config script to add the variable ADD_STATIC_ROUTES right before the firewall rules are loaded. Summary ----------- /etc/sysconfig/config - Addition of variable ADD_STATIC_ROUTES /etc/init.d/routes - New startup script /etc/routes.conf - New configuration script chown 700 /etc/init.d/routes chown 700 /etc/routes.conf Changes to runlevels ------------------------- ln -s ../routes /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S06routes ln -s ../routes /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S06routes Attached find the three files in question Additional Info which may or may not be helpful ---------------------------------------------------------- Here is my basic setup to get a picture default gateway = 66.247.73.174 eth0 - external static "66.247.73.169" 255.255.255.248 eth1 - dmz bogus address "192.168.254.254" public range 170-173 are arped via eth0 and a route entry eth2 - internal "192.168.0.1" Using fwbuilder for iptables generation With this setup I only give up one static ip address for the firewall ext interface... many other references on the net show how to create dmz's but give up extra addresses because they use their public addresses for the dmz port. The dmz bogus address is just that bogus, it prevents the routing table from seeing it as 0.0.0.0 and screwing things up for your internal interface. Most isp's don't assign blocks large enough these days to be worth subnetting out so I find this works well and preserves the address space for those of us with small subnets. You was you, i and everybody who install DL boxes (should i have said
"one is trying to seell it" ?? ) ... hope you don't take for you my
cynicism against the rules that leads our world
Last 6 month, I sold 4 DL boxes around (not the pc nor DL, but the work
i do on/with it), to make adsl routers with firewall with remote
admin/watch, taking the "place of France Telecom" (our hated
monopolistic operator) cause it' cheaper, rock solid as hardware ....
and I try to live from my work (can't manage until now :-{ ) , 'cause
it's HARD to promote FREE Software against M$ & Co ... but i'm Fanatic ;-)
so i UNDERSTAND You whish to earn some money, you don't have to justify
!! I'll be HAPPY you DO, you DESERVE it !

Just kidding !! My experimental work in converting DL to a harddisk version exposed a lot of the antiquated nature of unix/linux. My biggest issue is that Initrd is ram disk and not vfs and that initrd, being so central to all linuxes (except debian, I think) has no development track. I also feel that the init process is too constricting and that the inittab should be completely optional. For decades, Berkeley Unix and SunOS worked fine w/ only two rc files. Changing DL means weakening the security sturcture. My significant change to DL was to add a local /etc/ for auto boot if the floppy was not present. This weakens the structure because, based on a floppy failure, your firewall starts looking for a DHCP server !! Not good. I think that is the DL quandry. This is why I advocate application development rather than radically changing DL. along w/ documentation as Fredrick has been producing. One close friend and linux society member, Fancis :: rec...@ao..., is complaining that OpenSSH is out of control and full of holes. Thinking about something Heiko said about stunnel being a good basic protocol, I suggested using stunnel to wrap telnet. I built a metrics and documentation OO dataserver over the years, DepthDB. It has gotten big enough to be out of control itself, requiring a versioning system. Since I broke it and can't seem to fix it, I need to roll back to an earlier working version. It needs to be installed into sourceforge and then I need look for students seeking perl knowledge to create new features. The system is extremely fast, scales endlessly, and has an OO html editing and creation system and relies completely on the OS for its strength. It will require a C or C++ multi-threading server to be able to scale in the number of simultaneous updating users. This would have to be in-lined into the perl modules. DeptDBs strongest asset is its simplicity. The code is so sparse that you can instantly spot any possible security flaws. Even a non-perl person can do this. As soon as my taxes are out of the way (today), I am going to get a simplifed working version and demo it for you guys as a possible DL documentation and configuration dataserver. Going a little farther w/ the perl concept, it appears that perl remains the best, or even only OO language for the Unix variants at the OS level, despite the popularity of Python. Perl is a hybrid of the basic Unix languages, shell, C, awk and sed, its perfect (so get rid of it)** ** from the geekcode site The Webmin product is in perl, and has a perl SSL webserver, and I have my perl written portal up and running, http://www.thinman.com, which I invite you to fool with. Maybe you can guess that I think perl is a good direction for DL. The perl culture itself needs direction and guidence at the moment. I, admitedly, got hotheaded at certain points while trying to advocate the language, because over reacted to some really hard headed attitudes in the perl community. It would be much better idea to approach perl politics as a group. Perls new shining star is the Parrot VM. Despite being named after an Aprils fool joke annoucing the merging of perl and python, it is deadly serious in that it based on CPU registers rather than CPU intensive stacks. IMHO that bring perl right down to the hardware level.. but that is another topic, DL v3.* John --- Heiko Zuerker <hz...@pr...> wrote: > Howdy ! > > On 04/10/2003 03:02:40 AM Emmanuel ESCARABAJAL wrote: > >> Topher, the guy who sells the CDs for us (or at least tries), made the > >> suggestion that we should change the version number of DL to v1.0 > >> instead of 0.6. > > > >when marketing begins to rule the World ... ;-))) > > Doesn't marketing and the media already rule the world ? > > >> I think he's right, that sounds much more confident for our users. I felt that 0.6 was definately a 1.0 It is almost impossible to improve on, just minor improvements. The big change to DL is to build the web based ISO creator, and the diluted versions with remote configuration. I see it as a possible test base for techniques, like using stunnel for various apps with strong documentation. I wish it were possible to force users to document everything they do. Why not. Redhat also jumped from 8.0 to 9.0 (I'd say to get above SuSE, at least in the version number) so why not start a new numbering schema. So 1.0 is a final, 1.1 the next beta release and so on. Hey, Topher, the guy who sells the CDs for us (or at least tries), made the suggestion that we should change the version number of DL to v1.0 instead of 0.6. I think he's right, that sounds much more confident for our users. On the other hand we're still far away from the point where we want to be, but will we ever be perfect ? DL has it's second birthday coming up in a couple of month, wouldn't it earn a 1.0 release? Comments welcome... -- Regards Heiko We are Penguin, resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |
