Just kidding !! My experimental work in converting DL to a harddisk version exposed a lot of the antiquated nature of unix/linux. My biggest issue is that Initrd is ram disk and not vfs and that initrd, being so central to all linuxes (except debian, I think) has no development track. I also feel that the init process is too constricting and that the inittab should be completely optional. For decades, Berkeley Unix and SunOS worked fine w/ only two rc files. Changing DL means weakening the security sturcture. My significant change to DL was to add a local /etc/ for auto boot if the floppy was not present. This weakens the structure because, based on a floppy failure, your firewall starts looking for a DHCP server !! Not good. I think that is the DL quandry. This is why I advocate application development rather than radically changing DL. along w/ documentation as Fredrick has been producing. One close friend and linux society member, Fancis :: rec...@ao..., is complaining that OpenSSH is out of control and full of holes. Thinking about something Heiko said about stunnel being a good basic protocol, I suggested using stunnel to wrap telnet. I built a metrics and documentation OO dataserver over the years, DepthDB. It has gotten big enough to be out of control itself, requiring a versioning system. Since I broke it and can't seem to fix it, I need to roll back to an earlier working version. It needs to be installed into sourceforge and then I need look for students seeking perl knowledge to create new features. The system is extremely fast, scales endlessly, and has an OO html editing and creation system and relies completely on the OS for its strength. It will require a C or C++ multi-threading server to be able to scale in the number of simultaneous updating users. This would have to be in-lined into the perl modules. DeptDBs strongest asset is its simplicity. The code is so sparse that you can instantly spot any possible security flaws. Even a non-perl person can do this. As soon as my taxes are out of the way (today), I am going to get a simplifed working version and demo it for you guys as a possible DL documentation and configuration dataserver. Going a little farther w/ the perl concept, it appears that perl remains the best, or even only OO language for the Unix variants at the OS level, despite the popularity of Python. Perl is a hybrid of the basic Unix languages, shell, C, awk and sed, its perfect (so get rid of it)** ** from the geekcode site The Webmin product is in perl, and has a perl SSL webserver, and I have my perl written portal up and running, http://www.thinman.com, which I invite you to fool with. Maybe you can guess that I think perl is a good direction for DL. The perl culture itself needs direction and guidence at the moment. I, admitedly, got hotheaded at certain points while trying to advocate the language, because over reacted to some really hard headed attitudes in the perl community. It would be much better idea to approach perl politics as a group. Perls new shining star is the Parrot VM. Despite being named after an Aprils fool joke annoucing the merging of perl and python, it is deadly serious in that it based on CPU registers rather than CPU intensive stacks. IMHO that bring perl right down to the hardware level.. but that is another topic, DL v3.* John --- Heiko Zuerker <hz...@pr...> wrote: > Howdy ! > > On 04/10/2003 03:02:40 AM Emmanuel ESCARABAJAL wrote: > >> Topher, the guy who sells the CDs for us (or at least tries), made the > >> suggestion that we should change the version number of DL to v1.0 > >> instead of 0.6. > > > >when marketing begins to rule the World ... ;-))) > > Doesn't marketing and the media already rule the world ? > > >> I think he's right, that sounds much more confident for our users.
