Let me add that I blog with Wordpress and the more I blog with it, the more annoyed I get and the more I think "I'm going to look into switching to something else *because I hate this*". Why? I find their editing area (the actual text box where you enter your blog content) to be *maddeningly* inconsistent with formatting. I've worked with this on 3 blogs and do not see any lasting results from setting the default setting to "code view" (or "design view" for that matter). It seems to whimsically reformat valid (x)html as it pleases, even in so-called "code view". And I've tried a lot of things here, so I'm not saying this from one bad experience. I don't know if movabletype is better, but I do know that I'm going to check it out as an alternative. I also have a friend who blogs w/drupal (hence my original post) who seems quite happy with it. Good luck! So er, yeah, question. Last month there was talk that info.com wasn't able to host us anymore. I think Rich had offered his place, but that got interrupted by BarCamp. I have successfully run Drupal on FutureQuest and Pair Networks. I've heard a lot of unpleasant things about DreamHost, mostly that they over-fill servers, but haven't used them personally. For Drupal, I'd say for a medium to large site you definitely want to run with an opcode cache as it is non-small. For a personal blog, I run mine on Pair Networks just fine without it. You can find hosts that offer opcode caches for not that much, I've found, if you look around a bit. I will ask that you only consider hosts that support GoPHP5: http://gophp5.org/hosts . Why should be obvious. :-) (Pair Networks is not listed because they don't explicitly say 5.2 on their web site yet, but 5.2.3 is now their default for new accounts and PairLite, their junior version, is on the list.) --Larry Garfield On Tue, 17 Jul 2007 10:30:48 -0500, Sarah Gray <sa...@fa...> wrote: > Hey guys (Larry especially :) ) -- > > good hosts for drupal? Hey guys (Larry especially :) ) -- good hosts for drupal? This is for a personal blog site not a business, if that makes a difference. Thanks! |

Hi all. I was looking forward to taking advantage of the Beginner's Break segment of the upcoming Wednesday meeting. However, (much to my disappoint) I won't be able to attend due to an unexpected conflict with a meeting that has come up with my job. Hi folks, I wanted to take a moment to show you a new business I'm launching next month: http://www.compyschool.com I'm going to focus on beginner topics initially, so if you have a friend or relative who's always bothering you with computer questions, you can send them my way. (smile) Eventually I'd like to bring some of my professional colleagues in to teach higher-level classes. I'm also offering classroom rentals, so if you ever need to hold a training event for up to 12 people, I hope you'll get in touch. This is a big experiment, so wish me luck! A Chicago-based jingle company has a client Extranet that needs some cosmetic changes and a simple file/comments database (or file-based) system. I'd do it myself, except I have zero layout/graphics skills and negative time available... Here's an edited email exchange: Follow up with Brian with a bid to do what's listed here -- and there will be more work if things go well. -------------------------- Original Message -------------------------- Subject: Re: Freelance PHP Programmer From: "Brian Bullard" <br...@sp...> Date: Fri, July 6, 2007 10:36 am To: ce...@l-... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- So honestly, I don't think this project is going to be very difficult for an experienced PHP programmer. Let me tell you a little more about the project and maybe you can tell me if it's something you'd like to take on or pass along to the group. Basically, we're trying to upgrade our client portal in a few stages. At first, all we really need is the graphics changed so that it matches our new website design. http://spankmusic.com/ [the new look] http://mail.spankmusic.com/ [the old look] Secondly, we'd like to upgrade the user interface so that it's a little more intuitive. If you'd like to login, I set up a temporary user so that you could take a look. [deleted login info] [nb:] Here's a screen-shot of what you get after you login: http://l-i-e.com/spank/spank.gif (By the way, the portal runs off of a G5 OS X server in our office. The IPs are already set up to grab internet traffic and direct them to the portal.) Right now we have a simple folder system with text only, as you can see. All files for the clients are alphabetical here at this page. The "Inactive" link is actually a folder where we put older files. In the future, we'd love to have some type of graphic interface where we could have small icons and a timestamp of when each file was posted; and perhaps a small comments section where we can explain what files are what. This portal is important for our business because some of our clients are out of town, and we will possibly never meet them face to face. This small interface could be their only interaction with us. What we're looking for is something intuitive and simple. We're willing to negotiate payment either by the hour or flat rate (I'd even seriously consider trading for studio time!). Ideally, we would like someone who would be willing to get to know our system and stay in contact in case of any problems (though it's not required). So, that's pretty much the gist of it. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. And feel free to give me a call if you need anything audio-related! Brian Spank!Music -- Some people have a "gift" link here. Know what I want? I want you to buy a CD from some indie artist. http://cdbaby.com/browse/from/lynch Yeah, I get a buck. So? |

Thank you, Richard! Non-intuitively, the closest bus (for anyone for whom it makes any difference) is the Peterson bus from Bryn Mawr. It's not seriously convenient to the Metra station. On the other hand, it you're coming off the Drive, just follow Hollywood to Ridge to Peterson. And, if you're looking at Google maps (Hybrid or Satellite), the large blank area just west on Peterson is actually a new Target. On Mapquest, I don't think it's even the construction site yet. Maybe we could even get together at the Fireside Lounge some time . . .
