Hello from the Chicago Drupal Meet Up Group, Our February meetup is not Drupal specific and we are hoping to cross pollinate users between our groups. We are lucky to have found a local Chicago accountant who focuses on small-medium technology companies. Our meetup is called "Let's Talk Taxes", free, open to public, and is perfect timing for the tax season. We will also be discussing accounting software: "who is using which application and why?". Thursday February 24th @ 7:00 pm - RSVP @ http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/15937836/ Plus, we have to add a link for Drupalcon. Drupalcon will be the largest Drupal event ever, in Chicago, March 7-10 - http://chicago2011.drupal.org/ On 02/16/2011 10:22 AM, Neil Rest wrote: > Please do consider drupal. > > "CDMUG", the local users' group has free install sessions, both > weeknight (Thursday, April 7 > http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/16535050/ ) and Saturday > morning (March 5 http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/15745218/ ). > The monthly meetings are well attended and useful, though the March > meeting (Wednesday, March 16 > http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/16534917/ ) will be pretty > tired, since Chicago is hosting a monster drupal con at the beginning > of the month ( > http://chicago2011.drupal.org/ > http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/15324773/ ). > > > At 07:35 AM 2/16/2011, you wrote: > >> Hi Terry, >> >> I would just suggest that you check out Drupal which will give you >> all of those features out of the box (plus tons else, security >> updates, etc.). Please do consider drupal. "CDMUG", the local users' group has free install sessions, both weeknight (Thursday, April 7 http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/16535050/ ) and Saturday morning (March 5 http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/15745218/ ). The monthly meetings are well attended and useful, though the March meeting (Wednesday, March 16 http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/16534917/ ) will be pretty tired, since Chicago is hosting a monster drupal con at the beginning of the month ( http://chicago2011.drupal.org/ http://www.meetup.com/drupal-1/events/15324773/ ). At 07:35 AM 2/16/2011, you wrote: >Hi Terry, > >I would just suggest that you check out Drupal which will give you >all of those features out of the box (plus tons else, security >updates, etc.). In 2009, the worst economic year for working people since the Great Depression, the top 25 hedge fund managers walked off with an average of $1 billion each. With the money those 25 people "earned," we could have hired 658,000 entry level teachers. (They make about $38,000 a year, including benefits.) Those educators could have brought along over 13 million young people, assuming a class size of 20. That's some value. |

Hi Terry, I would just suggest that you check out Drupal which will give you all of those features out of the box (plus tons else, security updates, etc.). I'm planning to develop a new site. It will need user management: registration, activation, authentication, password reset, change password, change email, etc. What's out there that will do most of this for me? Do any of the frameworks make this a snap? Any other type of system you can recommend? I've implemented these features before myself, and I could start with that, but I'm looking for alternatives that might make more sense. Any comments on Usercake? http://usercake.com Thanks. Terry |

Hi folks. In case you haven't heard about it yet, this March Chicago will be hosting the largest web development conference the midwest will see this year: DrupalCon Chicago. What is this "Drupal" thing? It's the open source web CMS that powers 1% of the web, including Sony BMG, The Economist, WhiteHouse.Gov, and the US House of Representatives. The latest version, Drupal 7, was just released this month after nearly three years of active development by over 1000 people. http://drupal.org/ Although obviously centered around the Drupal web CMS, DrupalCon is an international conference in web development and will feature dozens of sessions, panels, and training seminars designed to get both new users and experienced veterans up-to-speed with the latest version of Drupal. The venue is Chicago's own Sheraton Hotel and Towers, March 7-10. Featured speakers include noted author and Internet visionary Clay Shirky, Web usability guru Jared Spool, and Drupal project lead Dries Buytaert. Other speakers include a Who’s Who of Web design experts such as Jeremy Keith, Mark Boulton, and Leisa Reichelt, and dozens more: http://chicago2011.drupal.org/sessions It's not just a PHP coder conference, either. Sessions are spread out fairly evenly between development, site building, design and usability, theming, business and project management, and community management. Tickets are $350 for early bird pricing through this Friday, 14 January, and $400 after that. That makes DrupalCon not only one of the largest web development conferences but also one of the cheapest. (Conferences a quarter the size routinely run over $1000.) To find out more and purchase your ticket today, go to: http://chicago2011.drupal.org/ You can also keep up-to-date with the latest information about DrupalCon Chicago by following @drupalcon on Twitter. --Larry Garfield |

Hey there, Chicago PHP folks! Hopefully this isn't too off-topic - we're looking to hire a WEB designer here at Weigel Broadcasting (WCIU, The U, Me-TV, Me-Too, The U Too, THIStv, etc.). This person won't need to know any back-end code, and it's okay if they don't know any front-end code... Really, we just need a butt-kickin' graphic designer who knows how to design for the web, and has a thing or two to say about user experience and user interface. If you know any freelance designers looking to go full-time, or any great designers looking for a new position, please have them send me their resumes directly - sg...@wc.... The late static binding is exactly what I needed for 5.3+. For pre-5.3, the override approach makes sense but only works for methods; it looks like a constant in a child class does not override a constant in the parent class. (But that can also be solved by adding a getter method to the child class, as you demonstrated.) Fortunately I have less need for pre-5.3 compatibility than I did a year ago when I first ran across this. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I believe you need late static binding for this (which was added in PHP 5.3). If you are running 5.3, you can use the "static" key word. e.g. class A { const MYNAME = "A"; function __construct() { echo static::MYNAME . "\n"; } } class B extends A { const MYNAME = "B"; } $a = new A(); // "A" $b = new B(); // "B" Prior to 5.3, you'd need to copy and "override" the same function to all children to achieve a similar style of late binding. e.g. class A { const MYNAME = "A"; function __construct() { echo self::MYNAME . " " . $this->myName() . "\n"; } function myName() { return self::MYNAME; } } class B extends A { const MYNAME = "B"; function myName() { return self::MYNAME; } } $a = new A(); // "A A" $b = new B(); // "A B" Moral of the story: Use 5.3 On 11/30/2010 04:09 PM, Arlo Leach wrote: > Well if that's resolved, then here's a similar question I've wondered about. Well if that's resolved, then here's a similar question I've wondered about. What's the best way to access constants and static methods of a child class from a parent class if there's more than one possible child class? I mean, I could call Child::CONSTANT or Child::method() if I know the child's name is Child, but I don't. The best I've come up with is a combination of eval and get_class(): <?php class Child extends Base { protected $size = 10; const USE_SESSIONS = false; public static function childMethod($step) { return "calling child method from step $step<br />"; } } class Base { function __construct() { // getting a property is no problem print "my size is ".$this->size."<br />"; // is there a cleaner way to get a constant? eval("\$use_sessions = ".get_class($this)."::USE_SESSIONS;"); print ($use_sessions) ? "using sessions<br />" : "not using sessions<br />" ; // test // is there a cleaner way to call a static method? eval("print ".get_class($this)."::childMethod(1);"); // this seems to work, actually ... is this valid? // I thought you had to use :: to call a static method print $this->childMethod(2); // this is better but requires PHP 5.3+ $classname = get_class($this); $use_sessions = $classname::USE_SESSIONS; print $classname::childMethod(3); } } $child = new Child(); ?> _______________________________ Arlo Leach 773.769.6106 http://arlomedia.com Honor two blues pioneers: http://mccoybrotherstribute.com |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Perhaps you are thinking of inner classes (where the outer scope is inherited in the inner scope). In this situation, you could have (pseudo code) class A { String x = "Outer Scope"; class B { public B { println(x); } } public static void run { B b = new B(); } } A::run(); PHP does not allow nesting classes, though you can use namespaces (5.3) to achieve similar results. That is the classical OO solution. Passing objects to objects is classically OO, whether you're in a "classic" (ie, class-using) OO language or not. Why is that a frightening answer? --Larry Garfield On 11/30/10 11:08 AM, Walter wrote: > Thank you gentlemen. > > You gave me the answer I was afraid of. Thank you gentlemen. You gave me the answer I was afraid of. I was hoping for a more classical OO solution, but, we work with what we have. Thanks again for the education. Walter |

You're just setting a property of an object to be another object. That is quite common and totally appropriate in many many circumstances. Passing $this to a constructor or a method is totally fine, since you're passing a handle to the object rather than duplicating the object. The thing to be careful of is creating circular references, which in PHP 5.2 equate to memory leaks. In this case, simply pulling data off of the creating object and not saving the object itself in the second class is fine and creates no circular reference (unless one of those properties is also an object), so all is right with the world. --Larry Garfield On Monday, November 29, 2010 9:21:37 pm Junkmail wrote: > I am having a hard time understanding why one would need/want to use this > technique. I am having a hard time understanding why one would need/want to use this technique. Can you explain a bit about the theory behind this pattern? I don't think I even understand how PHP would handle that. Creating a class and then setting it to another class?
