[Arsperl-users] Build make error for XP--help

Hi,
 I try to install ARSperl1-85 on my XP, typed perl
Makefile.PL, following the instruction, then come to
the point type nmake, then I got this error:

makefile(942) : fatal error U1087: cannot have : and
:: dependents for same target
Stop.


Could anyone help with this? Also, where I can find a
binary download for window XP?

I know its kinda funny when we read a def file getting corrupted, but =
yes it has happened recently it took hell lot of time to get that again. =
Yes lot other technicalities are associated that we had to bypass this =
option.

The only technical rub that I can think of would be if the work your
doing with these filters "turned off" would include other admin work.
( Which would make the concern about presents of the filters a really
strange, and seemingly unrelated to the work, thing to me in the first
place.)

The point of the packing list is to make it easier to process the set
once they are identified. (for export,  delete and import) The work of
identifying them has to be done "one at a time no mater how you look
at it.

Oh well, I guess there is more requirements that we do not know about.

I started with this approach only but the business and the =
management.... they didn't like this approach as they feared that def =
file may get corrupt. So I had to think of something new which could =

I am stuck in a situation where I need to switch the enable flag of a =
Filter to enabled or disabled using ARS Perl. I know that there is no =
API in here which sets the information for Filter.=20
Is there a workaround to this.=20

I have seen such a thing in Jython but don't want to go through learning =
a new scripting just for this as for all other purpose I'm using perl.

I have written an arsperl script that I am trying to run but it gives me th=

Can't locate ARS.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/perl5/....) at ./SomeFile.=
pl line 6.
But I can see the file ARS.pm in the directory.  And the error keeps coming=
 back despite all that I try.  Does anyone have an idea what the problem co=
uld be?
Any help would be appreciated!

Well, I guess I should've mentioned that. I am using
arsperl 1.85 and the 6.3 api libs. I guess whatever
caused this is rare enough to not have gotten fixed
yet. Either that, or the same error has multiple
causes. It's like the linker can't see the library,
except it is there.

I would love to tell you that I remember exactly what
was going on there, but as it was 3+ years ago, I
don't remember the details any more.  :(

What I would suggest is attempting to install 1.85
instead.  It is fully backwards compatible and will
give you some of the 6.3 functionality as well.  You
will just need the 6.3 api files in order to compile
it.

A whole herd of people asked for this so I thought it'd be easier to
send it out and those that do not wish to keep them may delete them.

Sorry for the time delay.  I've been traveling out of country and had to
pull individual subroutines from other pieces of code and validate the
whole thing.

Attached is a gzipped and tarred file containing three files:
remedyExport:	The script which actually does the export
remedyExportUpdate:	The script which compares data in the Server
Events table to determine what needs to be saved
remedyExport.pm:	A Perl module containing needed routines

Please note that, in order for remedyExportUpdate to work correctly, a
checkbox field, with a default value of unchecked, must be added to the
Server Events form.  The field ID on line 38 of remedyExportUpdate,
currently listed as 600000295, needs to be changed to the field ID of
the new field created on the Server Events form.

I hope, in the course of moving subroutines around, that I got all of
them.  Please let me know if I did not and I'll send out a revision to
the tarball.

the authors of ars_Export) and an in-house formatted dump file.  The
.def file can be used to import definitions, via the Admin tool.  The
in-house dump format is great for searching on.

I have an additional Perl script which runs every minute, via cron.  It
checks the Server Events table, calling the first script whenever a
change is made to an active link, active link guide, application, char
menu, escalation, filter, filter guide, packing list, schema, or web
service.  This requires the addition of a check box field on the Server
Events table and selecting, in the Admin tool, which objects you'd like
to track.

I have found these tools immeasurably beneficial because I can go back
to a previous version if a mod to an object has caused problems.

Although these are written in a Solaris environment, I would presume
that Windows has some kind of job scheduler which could run similarly.

[Arsperl-users] ARSperl/shell script config and data backup scripts

Dear All,

Given the interest in tools to generate .def files I have dug out the
attached scripts as an example of what could be done. They were developed
over a number of years but, as far as I know, have not been used for about 5
years.  They were also developed originally for ARS version 3*.

I have not been able to test them or be sure how relevant they are now - so
they are provided to just demonstrate the sort of things that can be done.

*** I tried attaching a zip file but the list will not allow that so I will
email it to those that request it. For a copy please email me at
petet-at-relston.co.uk ('-at-' to be replaced by '@').

The aim was to keep track of a number of Remedy servers spread across
Europe:
*	Backup the server configuration and license files
(To have safety copies and to centrally track licenses for support
renewals.),
*	Backup the definitions and version control with rcs,
*	Generate a notification when an application change was made
(For those situations where a location had a local admin user who also
thought they could customise their version of the application.), 
*	Backup data for all schemas or for a fixed set of key schemas per
server - probably just User/Group.

The server environment was AIX & HP-UX ARS versions 3* up to 4.0.5 and
ARSperl. The ARSperl scripts were developed from the ARSperl examples.

The data backup was done using arcopy which we found worked fairly well for
us. Given the demise of arcopy another solution would need to be found for
data backup. Personally I think it is a great pity that Remedy would not
fix/replace arcopy to give a proper automated data export tool. I hate the
idea of having to use the User Tool, I consider it to be the wrong tool for
the job.

The scripts involved were:
*	arbackup.sh		The main driver shell script.
*	ars_execprocess.pl		ARSperl script to run a command on a
server. This allowed files to be retrieved from the server.
*	dump_defs.pl		ARSperl script to create a .def file for a
server. It does not know about containers!
*	list_schemas.pl		ARSperl script to provide a list of data
schemas to be dumped.

I hope this provides some material for thought.

I have written a Perl script which runs nightly, via cron.  It writes out both a .def file (same as exporting from the Admin tool, thanks to the authors of ars_Export) and an in-house formatted dump file.  The .def file can be used to import definitions, via the Admin tool.  The in-house dump format is great for searching on.

 

I have an additional Perl script which runs every minute, via cron.  It checks the Server Events table, calling the first script whenever a change is made to an active link, active link guide, application, char menu, escalation, filter, filter guide, packing list, schema, or web service.  This requires the addition of a check box field on the Server Events table and selecting, in the Admin tool, which objects you'd like to track.

 

I have found these tools immeasurably beneficial because I can go back to a previous version if a mod to an object has caused problems.

 

Although these are written in a Solaris environment, I would presume that Windows has some kind of job scheduler which could run similarly.

 

If you (or anyone else) believes these tools might be beneficial, I'd be more than happy to send them out.

Yelizaveta,
I do not believe that the query string can be left blank.  Try using
'1=3D1' (without the quotes) for the query string.  Also check the
$ars_errstr and %ars_errhash after executing the call to
ars_LoadQualifier to see if anything shows up in those. If there are
values in those variables then an error occurred.  Also, verify that
those variables are undefined after attempting ars_Login.
