I've tried with perl5.001 and perl5.002 and still can't duplicate the problem. :-( I have no idea what could cause this since ars perl just passes a pointer to the schema name to the c api. Who knows, maybe perl isn't terminating the strings with a null in your perl version? I'm looking into it. > > I am having problem accessing schema names with spaces using ars_GetEntry. I am having problem accessing schema names with spaces using ars_GetEntry. It did not coredump on me. It just die quietly. However, Joel Murphy said he has no problem manipulating schema names with spaces. I am still trying to figure it out. If the schema name contain a space, e.g. "Customer Ticket", it seems that the ars_GetSchema would choke and core dump on you. Have anyone seen this problem? I am running on Solaris 2.4 with ARS 2.0. (I have flat file in the back end instead of Oracle, not sure whether that make any difference). I will eventually get the Oracle back end in several weeks. Thanks for any information. According to the ars programmers guide, if you don't compile with the sys v compiler, you need to link with libarcat.a. so just add -larcat to the $ARS_LIBS line in Makefile.PL. > I finally compiled ARSperl extension successfully on SunOs 4.1.3_U1. Hmm, I never used entry ids other than the default 15 numeric characters so I didn't catch this one. Apparently, entry-ids can have text as well, so I just removed the zero padding hack. I'll add a ARS::pad_entryid function that will do the right amount of padding, and post a diff. |

Hi there, I have successfully built arsperl on IRIX 6.2 (alpha), with some very minor changes, which I think were just issues with the latest compiler. At some point I will try compiling on 5.3 and see if I have more fluid (change-free) luck. The problem I was having before (if any of you recall) was that the version of perl was a pruned one, which did not contain all the header files and the like, but rather only the files needed for run-time. Anyway, on to the main topic of this particular mailing... in the ARGetEntry call in ARS.c, (line 1621 of the version I have), the third argument is ``pad_entry'', which is of type AREntryIdType, and which is set up to be padded with 0's to the length of 15 characters. This probably ought to be dynamic, based on the ARFieldLimitStruct returned by ARGetField. I have a schema with a 10 character long entryId, and it seems that it is impossible to get any records out of it using arsperl. I imagine that my description here is sufficient information for a code change, but if you (the developers that are on this list) would like further information, please let me know. Cheers. The problem is that it is unable to create a shared library from the distributed ars static library. On a typical system with elf binaries, each object file must be compiled with -fpic to be position independant in memory. Since we can't recompile libar.a, the next best thing would be to build the extension right into the perl executable. I'll haven't done that before, but it shouldn't require too many modifications. joel murphy |

i was able to build perl5.001 under "IRIX 5.2 02282016 IP22 mips" with dynamic loading. when the Configure script asked what sort of dynamic loading to use, choose "ext/DynaLoader/dlopen.xs" (i think that is the path.. definately choose "dlopen.xs"). after that i was able to to a "perl Makefile.PL" and compile ARSperl to an object file. since i dont have libar.a for irix, i was unable to test it further. however, it did appear to compile without problems. i only had to add this to the DEFINE='' line in "Makefile.PL": 'DEFINE' => '-D_SVR4_SOURCE -U_POSIX_SOURCE -U_XOPEN_SOURCE' and add #include <string.h> right beneathe "#include <stdio.h>" in ARS.xs (this should have been there for the standard distribution.. which I just updated, since Solaris uses string.h as well). try compiling perl5.001 and then do the ARSperl installation.. it *should* work.. jeff |

ok. i've checked into it.. apparently irix ships with perl4 .. not perl5. so you will need to compile perl5 first before you use this extension. i've obtained an account on a local sgi and i'm seeing if perl5 compiles on it. i'll let you know what options i used for getting the DynaLoader to work (assuming i get it to work :). and then i'll see if i can build the ARSperl extension on it. jeff |

TOP should be set to the top of your perl source code directory. for example, on our system: TOP = /utiloss/lib/perl5 also: be sure that module support and dynamic linking are compiled into your perl binary. by default i dont think it is. |

Hi all (how many of us are there as yet?)... I hope I'm not spamming you with something that's been asked, but my impression is that this list is very new, and that that is unlikely, so here I go: I'm trying to install ARSperl on an SGI box... yeah, I know, not supported... but that's what BETA means, right? so anyway... here's what I'm running into: 1) Some of the filenames (locations for things) are a bit weird... This I can cope with, but here's what I've changed: problem file old new ------------ -------------------- ---------------- Makefile.PL /utiloss/bin/perl /usr/local/bin/perl Makefile.PL /ware/ars/api/lib /usr/ar/api/lib Makefile.PL /ware/ars/api/include /usr/ar/api/include (Yes, these second two are documented in INSTALL as needing changes, but I think the defaults that Remedy supplies (/usr/ar, for me, anyway) would be good ones to go with.) 2) After fixing the above, I can still not successfully run Makefile.PL, as it complains that it can't find the subroutine called WriteMakefile. This is fixed when I change that call to writeMakefile. (lower case w) 3) next, it complains about the absence of a "config.sh". If I set 'TOP' in the call to writeMakefile, this seems to be fixed. 4) with TOP set to the directory I'm working in, running Makefile.PL causes a problem finding ext/util/extliblist in that directory. It still seems to create a Makefile, though. 5) and now I get: don't know how to make $(TOP)/EXTERN.h (bu42). ($(TOP) is expanded in the error message) So... it looks like I'm missing something serious. Any idea what that might be? Hope I'm not just being brain dead... (very possible, I've not been having the best day...) Cheers. David -- David Lindes li...@sg... +1/415-933-4749 |
