so the solution is obvious. On dowload what you get is a gz file. First change the file name for .tgz Then proceed to gunzip + tar But now I get a full bunch of "cannot create" message. I guess I'll find the solution by searching the archive. Thanks for your Time anyway. I just noticed, even if the link to download the file shows a tgz file, and even if you guys talk about a tgz file, the download gives you a gz file. Is that maybe something relevan? maybe I am downloading another file ?!? Any Idea ? I tried both on Windows XP Pro Version 2 SP 2 with WinZip 9.0 SR-1 (6224) and on SunOS 5.9 on a Sun4U sparc and gunzip 1.3.3. Maybe I am having a wrong file ? No clue because it should be it. Right ? So what is going wrong here? Any other idea? What are you using to unpack the .tgz file? I'm guessing windows? If you are unzipping and getting a binary file, it's likely that your unzip package decompressed the compressed image into a tar file. You now have to unpack the tar file. Winzip usually asks something like "this looks like a compress tar file do you want me to uncompress it and then unpack it?" jeff |

well jeff, this is exactly my point: I can't proceed to step 4 because already at step 3 I don't find any Makefile.PL Any other help or thought ? dear list, I've been reading the page http://arsperl.sourceforge.net/install.html I've been downloading the ARSperl-1.85.tgz I've been unzipping it. But I can't find any Makefile or somthing similar. All I get is a file saved as hexadecimal. When I convert it to normal human readable file, I can find at the begining of the file the following: >>>>>> ARSperl-1.85/ARSOOform.pm >>>>>> 0000644 0007665 0000512 00000043455 10107012326 015340 0 >>>>>> ustar jcmurphy opnstaff >>>>>> # >>>>>> # ARSperl - An ARS v2-v4 / Perl5 Integration Kit >>>>>> # >>>>>> # Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Joel Murphy, jm...@ac... >>>>>> # Jeff Murphy, jcm...@ac... >>>>>> # >>>>>> # This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or >>>>>> modify >>>>>> # it under the terms as Perl itself. >>>>>> # >>>>>> # Refer to the file called "Artistic" that accompanies the source >>>>>> distribution >>>>>> # of ARSperl (or the one that accompanies the source distribution >>>>>> of Perl >>>>>> # itself) for a full description. >>>>>> # >>>>>> # Official Home Page: >>>>>> # http://arsinfo.cit.buffalo.edu/perl >>>>>> # >>>>>> # Mailing List (must be subscribed to post): >>>>>> # ar...@ar... >>>>>> # Please forgive my ignorance, but what should I do with this ? I though I would get a set of files, among others a MakeFile. How can I install the ARSPerl ? Thank you for your help. Serouche |

First of all, hello again. The AR Server is reachable within the network (ping, nslookup). I couldn't try rpcinfo yet, i'll try on monday, when i'm on my work pc again. I actually already tried the code you wrote. It returns after some minutes, with an error i don't remember yet. I'll give closer information on monday. Did you verify (ping, nslookup, rpcinfo) that the AR server is actually reachable from/known to the client running ARSperl? If you run a really basic test script, e.g. use ARS; my $ctrl = ars_Login( "server", "user", "passwd" ); die "ars_Login(): $ars_errstr\n" if $ars_errstr; does it stop after waiting 2-3 minutes? And if so, what's the error message returned? Regards, Thilo Stapff Georg Grabler schrieb: > No, the server runs on the standard AR port. No, the server runs on the standard AR port. Other systems (AIX, HPUX) also don't have set this environment variable. Does your AR server use a specific TCP port? If so, you need to set (and export) the ARTCPPORT environment variable to run the tests. Hello, I'm trying to bind arsperl with the 5.01 api version of arslib. The appropriate files are in the directory /usr/ar/api/ what seems quite fine for the Makefile.PL I'm using a automated build system called makepkg on the distribution archlinux, so don't get too confused by the following lines: I'm using a patch to do the following (i felt the whole patchfile has too much overhead): -$ARSVERSION = 6.3; +$ARSVERSION = 5.01; ... ... +$SERVER = ''; +$PASSWORD=''; +$USERNAME=''; At all, the first shall switch the version to my api version, the server password and username skips the tests for the final build, i won't do them as soon as it's working. Anyway, i've a problem doing the quests anyway. I start make test (have set the right username / password / server) and it keeps hanging at the first test. [n501931@n501931pc ARSperl-1.85]$ make test PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 /usr/bin/perl "-MExtUtils::Command::MM" "-e" "test_harness(0, 'blib/lib', 'blib/arch')" t/*.t t/00connect.......... Also, i've simply installed arsperl without testing, same occurs there: can't login at all, it seems as if RPC isn't working. Do you have any suggestions on this? Am i missing something? Or any ideas what i could try? // STi |

Jack, this looks like a bug in the ARS.xs file. It might work if you edit line 4295 of ARS.xs as follows: Replace "int len;" by "STRLEN len;" or "unsigned int len;" Regards, Thilo Stapff Jack Samson wrote: > Hi All, > > I am on a solaris server and am trying to compile perl. Hi, I'm currently working on the V7 migration. In fact, my private version of ARSperl already works with ARS 7.0 (but doesn't compile against older API versions, so I haven't anything released for now). Hopefully I'll find the time to do some work during this week, so the new code might be checked in to the Sourceforge CVS by next weekend.
