I agree with the renaming of the Emacs menu which is more explanatory. As to the other suggestions, I see no compelling reason to change the existing names. Two points:
(1) "Speech"-"Speech options"-"Test settings" gives an error on my edition:
Error executing speak::_testSettingsProc
can't read "tokenA(,Pitch:)": no such element in array
(2): my "Speech" speaks with German accent - even when reding English texts. The language must be set somewhere - but where? Please forgive me if this is an OSX issue - I just write this as a simple user.

More on these issues. It looks like voices are different on High Sierra than on Mavericks. On more recent versions of the system, the available voices correspond to different locales: there is a voice to speak german (Anna), a voice to speak french (Thomas), a voice to speak chinese (Ting-Ting) etc. Here are the voices available for the english language: Locale | Voice ---------- | ---------- en-scotland | Fiona en_AU | Karen en_GB | Daniel en_IE | Moira en_IN | Veena en_US | Alex en_US | Fred en_US | Victoria en_US | Samantha en_ZA | Tessa On older versions of the system, all voices were english speakers (Alex, Fred and Victoria are survivors of this ancient period). Alpha's *[speech attributes]* command had to be fixed on High Sierra due to a change in the object returned by the Age key. I agree that the *Text Options* submenu would be better located in the Edit menu. This is what *TextEdit* does for similar options. Still I prefer to have the options contained in a submenu (again like *TextEdit*) to avoid cluttering the menu. I'll move it.
The Spelling functionality is found in the Edit menu in many Apple Apps.

In the "Text" Menu, so far, all items except one are about editing paragraphs or blocks of texts.
The exception is "Text options". All its subitems are in fact about "Typing options".
Still, they can be left in the menu. My opinion: the submenu should not be renamed, but
should be taken out, and all points added directly at the bottom of the
Text menu, below a separator. Also, the items should be verbs:
"Color text"
...
"Correct spelling"
"Replace text"
In my view, all "Spelling" items could go to the "Text" Menu together, also those from the "Tools" menu.

I agree more or less with the fact that a menu command should contain a verb or an action, but I don't think that this applies to submenus. The submenu is a sort of container and its name should reflect the theme or the topic covered by the commands it contains. I'm not a native english speaker, so I can't say what's best between *Speech* and *Speak*, but the *Edit* menu is as good a candidate to contain this submenu as the others. The first point has been fixed now. The Speech Options dialog has been entirely redesigned. Concerning the second point, there is nothing I can do: maybe a problem of locale ? The synthesizer is dependent on the locale. I have encountered the following today when working with 2 monitors on the one machine. Have a latex document open on both monitors but have the focus window on monitor 2. Now try to insert a equation reference. Specifically, type \eqref{ into the document on monitor 2, thereby triggering the electric completion. A list appears in a dialog box on monitor 1. If I select an element from the list presented then it gets inserted into the document open on monitor 1. However, if I drag the dialog box onto monitor 2 before making a selection from the list then the selected reference is inserted in the appropriate place in the document on monitor 2. I have noticed this before, so it is not new to this version of Alpha, but not for a while, which probably just serendipity. (I typically work with the source on my left (monitor 1) and the view on my right (monitor 2), but not today for some reason.

In recent times I have noticed that if I try to compare windows I get error messages telling me that there is a problem setting up the Diff menu. If I just hit Continue then it seems to get over the problem and carry on correctly. I can't recall exactly when this started happening, or even if I used to use one of the other Diff apps offered under Alpha>Global Setup>Helper Applications... For example, it happens often that when invoking Compare Windows nothing happens -- until you move the mouse (no click or other action needed), then the diff starts. It is not always it happens but sometimes. Another example, perhaps different, is when backwards synching from Skim. Nothing happens, until you manually shift to Alpha, then the action starts, with Alpha correctly selecting the line.
