Saw the new RPMs for KDE2.1 yesterday and upgraded my machine. Now I KDE does not work anymore :( I had KDE2.01 working ad upgraded the filesets with rpm -U <rpms> rpm -qa|egrep "kde|qt" on my box now gives: kdeadmin-2.1-1 qt-2.2.4-1 kdesupport-2.1-1 kdegraphics-2.1-1 kdepim-2.1-1 kdeutils-2.1-1 kdelibs-sound-2.1-1 kdenetwork-2.1-1 kdelibs-2.1-1 kdetoys-2.1-1 kdebase-2.1-1 When I try to start /opt/freeware/kde/bin/kdm as before it switches shortly to X then exits back to the command line. Same, if I do a 'xinit' as user. Are there any specific upgrade procedures to follow? Hi, I have tried installing the rpm.rte file on our AIX 4.3.3 server. The install works well and i am able to install rpm's afterwards. However when I install an RPM the database shows that it is not installed (ie rpm -qi). However when I go to re-install the rpm it says that the rpm is already installed. I have tried the current rpm.rte (3.0.5.17) and the older 3.0.5.14 and have the same problem. We have noticed that it sometimes errors with try /sbin/install-info not found. Once installed the apps seem to work, but we are unable to remove or manage them easily Any help would be much appreciated Alex Flatow Technical Manager Halescom |

(Forwarded for general information to the public mailing list at aix...@os...) The version of gcc that is currently out there is "beta" and will soon be superceded by another version that was developed for the GNUPro Tools from Cygnus. My understanding is that Cygnus' versions do not map precisely to the "standard" versions. I'll try to get a direct response from Cygnus on how to answer the question. It is "later" than 2.95.2 from my understanding. Hopefully all of this will settle down at the 3.0 merge as the AIX fixes get pulled into the main branches. I believe that this level does contain a number of fixes for AIX which are not in the standard GCC release. Those pthread.h errors are fixed already in the AIX 4.3.3 service stream and in AIX 5.1. What's szbuf? That just looks like a warning - shouldn't have stopped anything from compiling. In AIX, the format argument to printf is const char* - szbuf doesn't smell like a const. I would expect a warning in that circumstance. Marc > > Sorry to repost a message, but I'm hoping someone can answer my questions. > I've got code that builds with GCC 2.95.2 on Solaris and Linux. We finished this discussion off-line. He extracted the /usr/sbin/updtvpkg script which we developed based upon a similar script developed by Tim Mooney in North Dakota, and that served his purpose. Marc |

Sorry to repost a message, but I'm hoping someone can answer my questions. I've got code that builds with GCC 2.95.2 on Solaris and Linux. I get compile errors with the GCC compiler in the AIX toolkit. Here are my questions: 1. Is the compiler in the toolkit non-standard? Does it contain fixes for AIX that are not part of a standard GCC release? 2. What level of GCC is it based on? GCC -v returns "gcc version 2.9-aix43-000718". Thanks! Mike Allen -----Original Message----- From: Mike Allen Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 1:30 PM To: 'aix...@au...' Subject: Compile errors from GCC tools for AIX (aix43-000718) Greetings, I just installed the GCC tools for AIX (aix43-000718). I'm trying to compile code that builds OK with GCC 2.95.2 on Solaris and Linux. I'm getting the following warnings: In file included from atmemmgr.cpp:37: /usr/include/pthread.h:113: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:128: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_COND_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:147: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_RWLOCK_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:157: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT' Here is the header from the pthread.h file: /* static char sccsid[] = "@(#)15 1.32.2.32 src/bos/usr/ccs/lib/libpthreads/pthread.h, libpth, bos43R 11/24/99 12:02:08"; */ /* * COMPONENT_NAME: libpth * * FUNCTIONS: * * ORIGINS: 27, 71, 83 * * LEVEL 1, 5 Years Bull Confidential Information * * (c) Copyright 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 OPEN SOFTWARE FOUNDATION, INC. * ALL RIGHTS RESERVED * * OSF/1 1.2 */ I edited the pthread.h file to add white space to the indicated lines so that I could go further. Then I hit this warning: atmemmgr.cpp:1368: warning: format not a string literal, argument types not checked Here is the offending line from the source: fprintf(stderr,szBuf); Again, this compiles fine with gcc 2.95.2 on Linux. There doesn't seem to be any way to turn off this warning. What level is the compiler in this package? Here is what I get from gcc -v Reading specs from /usr/gcc/aix43-000718/H-powerpc-ibm-aix4.3.3.0/bin/../lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-ib m-aix4.3.3.0/2.9-aix43-000718/specs gcc version 2.9-aix43-000718 Thanks, Mike Allen ----------- WRQ, Inc. (ie. dump.c, dump.db.c, etc... ) What do you know? I've been working on rpm for months, and I've never paid attention that some of those tools aren't shipped. Once I got RPM working, I pretty much just moved on to the other things that needed to be worked on. Have you pulled down our SRPM for rpm and just built it using rpm? That should get you most of the way there, I'd think. Would you not just be able to visit the tools directory and do make those specific tools from there, then? > > > >> I have also noticed that the normal install of rpm installs itself as > >> rpm-'version'-'release', but it looks like the AIX rpm.rte version is in the > rpm > >> database as AIX-rpm-'aix version'-'release' (ie. I added the rpm because there IS information about the functions installed with rpm.rte, which is technically not AIX. I originally called that virtual packages "SysProvides," but I just personally found that an awkward name. I originally excluded the information from rpm.rte, but ran into situations where things were failing to install because they needed something that actually WAS provided by rpm.rte - the compression library zlib, for example. I chose to represent what was actually installed as closely as possible. > > TIA, > > - Mike Donahue > > > -- Marc Stephenson IBM Server Group - Austin, TX Internet: ma...@au... NOTES: ma...@us... I am trying to find if I still have the sources around of what I compiled. If I have them (which that was 2 years ago, most likely not) I can send them to you. Otherwise I could probably go back through and recompile it again, usually easier the 2nd time around... GRegg P.S. I love the html side of ntop, that's the main reason why I was interested in the application... Marc Stephenson <ma...@au...> on 03/09/2001 08:08:48 PM Please respond to ma...@au... That is a virtual package which gets built when rpm.rte is installed to provide RPM with the information about what was installed via installp. It's basically lslpp -f | /usr/lib/rpm/find-provides with a little bit extra logic. It allows rpm to find the dependencies provided by things installed by installp. Marc - Thanks for your quick reply. >When you build db, you need to configure with --enable-compat185. We have >db (it's really db1) available as an RPM in the AIX Toolbox, and it is Well, no I didn't build db 2.7.7 with the --enable-compat185. I just installed the pre-built rpm. I suppose I can rebuild db if that is necessary. Would it make sense to provide the 2.7.7 rpm for db with this already done for the future? >also installed as part of our rpm.rte installp image for 4.3.3. >You have your own rpm then, and not the version from the AIX toolbox? Yes, I used the rpm.rte package to install rpm 3.0.5 and then I downloaded the rpm 3.0.5 source from the web page. I need to build the rpm tools in order to get one of the utilities I'm working on to work. I have also noticed that the normal install of rpm installs itself as rpm-'version'-'release', but it looks like the AIX rpm.rte version is in the rpm database as AIX-rpm-'aix version'-'release' (ie. AIX-rpm-4.3.3.10-1). I found this a bit odd. Can you elaborate on why this was done this way? TIA, - Mike Donahue Marc Stephenson <ma...@au...> on 03/12/2001 10:54:24 AM Please respond to ma...@au... When you build db, you need to configure with --enable-compat185. We have db (it's really db1) available as an RPM in the AIX Toolbox, and it is also installed as part of our rpm.rte installp image for 4.3.3. You have your own rpm then, and not the version from the AIX toolbox? Marc (P.S. Hi - I'm trying to build some tools for my rpm database and I need to re-build rpm 3.0.5 to get use of some of the tools it provides, but when I try to run configure rpm for the build, it complains that rpm needs db-1.85 API. I do have db ver 2.7.7 installed, but there are significant changes between the two database versions, and 2.7.7 cannot even read the rpm database. Do you have a copy of db-1.85 available??? Also, are there any other tools need to rebuild rpm that may not be avialable? TIA, - Mike Donahue |

I don't see any rsync configuration options to enable large files. Are you using a file system which isn't large file-enabled by chance? Run "lsfs -q fsname" and check the value for bf. If it's not true, then you don't have a large file-enabled filesystem. You can't large-file-enable existing filesystem; they have to be created that way. Marc P.S. I forwarded this to the aixtoolbox public mailing list, aix...@os.... Right - we have a list of about 29 requested packages which have passed through at least one legal checklist (there are multiple things we have to check). There are some 40 or so more that people have requested that have not been approved for redistribution at all from IBM (a slow process for things which have patent grant language in their licenses). Here are the 29 - these aren't necessarily the ones which we would attack next. Some we might never get to. I'm torn about making a vanilla apache RPM available since there is a publicly available version in the IBM HTTP Server. aalib bind ddd ethereal fvwm2 gd gif2png gnuplot groff IceWM netcdf openldap php pine ppp proftpd pstoedit psutils squid tgif traceroute trueprint xemacs xftp xmcd xmms xntp xpaint xv - this one might have license problems Eventually I'll open "bug reports" to make all this public. I have an internal aversion to opening "bug reports" that I know I can't turn around that quickly. Here are some others that have been requested at one time or another. apache autotrace c2ps cdf dx fltk fox hdf hp2xx jpeg2ps latex libmng libwmf mesa Mgv monitor netpbm plotutils pnmtopng procmail sendmail sketch smake StarOffice t1lib wvWare xdir The ones formally requested through the project page are openldap, ethereal, etherape, and plotutils. If there is something that you would like to see, submit a bug report as David suggested. That's the place that will get the most attention. There is not a public list of software in the process of being ported, but you can find a list (in its infancy) of requested software at the toolbox web site, and you can also make your own requests there, under the "bugs" section as a "request": http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/projects/aixtoolbox I do not see any sign of an open source version of RealAudio; I don't think that it exists; we cannot provide it unless it is open source (and if the license also allows it). We would love to get StarOffice working on AIX and it is being looked at -- but it is an enormous package; there is no target for availability at this point.
