All the QuickCam software for Linux uses inb and outb function calls to access the parallel port. Is this going to be supported under AIX? I have a quickcam I would like to use on my RS6k GRegg Thompson gth...@go... P.S. I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this... |

Hi all, we appreciate very much this initiative. Especially KDE/Gnome can help us a lot to keep some RS6k's as desktop systems and to integrate all Aix and Linux boxes in an identical environment. There is one point, where Marc or other IBMers may have a good possibility to help us ('us' in the meaning of lots of RS6k users all over the world) even more: Please pull the strings to get a device driver with more than 8bits color depth for the GXT130P !!!! This is nothing else than a Matrox Millenium G200, it probably has its 8MB memory and it's a real nuisance to run it with 8bit. No, we don't have the money to buy a GXT255P/300P for all our boxes :( Regards, Ralf -- Ralf Utermann _____________________________________________________________________ Universität Augsburg, Institut für Physik -- EDV-Betreuer Universitätsstr.1 D-86135 Augsburg Phone: +49-821-598-3231 SMTP: Ral...@Ph... Pat, I have downloaded the libpcap package from http://www.tcpdump.org/ and was able to build it on AIX 4.3.3 (read the README.aix file for hints on doing this). Can't say anything about etherape, though. Pat Strode wrote: > Hello, > > I have just installed the AIX Toolbox for Linux and gcc on one of our SP nodes at Cooper Power Systems. We've had requests for a couple of things which use libpcap, so it's on the list. This is the first request for Etherape. We've had multiple requests for Ethereal, but none for NetSaint or Ntop. Commo isn't my area of expertise, but we'll enlist some help to flush out our offerings in that area. You can submit a "bug report" to request the tools at our project page at http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/projects/aixtoolbox to help us remember the request. Did you build etherape using run-time linking? That is, did you specify -brtl when you built it? I assume that you did, since it was unlikely that you would be able to link successfully without it. I'm not sure if glade has been used extensively - it could easily be a problem there. P.S. I forwarded this to the new mailing list, aix...@os.... > > Hello, > > I have just installed the AIX Toolbox for Linux and gcc on one of our SP nodes at Cooper Power Systems. Hello, I have just installed the AIX Toolbox for Linux and gcc on one of our SP nodes at Cooper Power Systems. It runs quite well. Can you port etherape and libpcap to AIX ?? I have attempted to compile etherape 5.6 for Linux under AIX using the toolbox and it does compile. The problem I run into is that the buttons do not respond when clicked. The errors seem to come from Glade and/or GTK. As usuall, the etherape programs runs quite well under native Linux. Etherape is a graphical network monitor which uses libpcap. Do you have any plans to port Ethereal, NetSaint, or Ntop to AIX ?? Thanks in advance, Pat Strode |

I had the same problem. You need to install the 'info' package. You can download it from the following URL if you don't already have it. http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html - MJD "Graeme Murray" <gra...@db...> on 03/08/2001 08:54:50 AM To: aix...@au... cc: (bcc: Michael J. This has got to be the most frequently asked question. You need to install the info RPM. I've considered strongly slapping info into the rpm.rte installp image because so many people have run into the problem. P.S. If you are just looking for a way to use the CDE login panel with, well, GNOME is what I've used so far, you can do the following: 1. Add this to your $HOME/.dtprofile: ---- 8< ---- cut here ---- 8< ---- # If you want to use $HOME/.xsession instead of just going into CDE, uncomment... if [ -x /usr/bin/gnome-session ]; then SESSIONTYPE=xdm fi ---- 8< ---- end cut ---- 8< ---- 2. Then change your $HOME/.xsession as usual to run gnome-session. (If you don't have one, you can steal the default one from /usr/lpp/X11/defaults/xinitrc. Copy that file to $HOME/.xsession, and make sure it is executable.) Before the failsafe "exec mwm" at the end of the file, insert the following: ---- 8< ---- cut here ---- 8< ---- if [ -x /usr/bin/gnome-session ]; then exec /usr/bin/gnome-session fi That's it! This doesn't give you the easy ability to select which DE you want (you would have to edit the .dtprofile and maybe the .xsession files), but it does allow you the ability to use the CDE login panel, when the "Command Line Login" feature, which many folks find very useful. I haven't played enough with KDE to know how to do the same thing there, but I suspect it is very similar, perhaps replace "gnome-session" with the equivalent for KDE, above. If someone figures it out, please post it here! Paul Clarke > I asked the CDE development team about this. We're going to publish KDE 2.1 soon, but we're going to do it at the same time that we align ourselves with future changes to libtool, which will allow our offerings to become compatible with the freeware offerings from Bull. Unfortunately, there are some very low-level libraries which will change in a one-time-only binary incompatible fashion which will be painful for many of us. I'm going to see what I can do to reduce the amount of trouble that it causes everyone. First, make sure that you have the requisite software installed to fix that dcopserver problem as described in the README: 1. Make sure that you have the required AIX software installed. Run the following command to see if the required software is installed: lslpp -L X11.adt.lib X11.apps.xdm X11.samples.apps.clients If any of these are missing, install them from your AIX 4.3.3 installation media. If you don't install X11.saamples.apps.clients, you will be missing iceauth, which is required to start kde2 - you'll see messages about dcopserver. 2. Download and install X11 fixes from APAR IY15017 required to make KDE-2.0.1 start reliably (approximately 7MB required for download): $ ftp ftp.software.ibm.com ftp> cd aix/fixes/v4/X11 ftp> bin ftp> prompt ftp> mget X11.base.lib.4.3.3.27.bff X11.base.rte.4.3.3.10.bff ftp> quit $ inutoc . # To save disk space, you may want to specify -qacXgd on the next line $ installp -qaXgd . Greetings, I just installed the GCC tools for AIX (aix43-000718). I'm trying to compile code that builds OK with GCC 2.95.2 on Solaris and Linux. I'm getting the following warnings: In file included from atmemmgr.cpp:37: /usr/include/pthread.h:113: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:128: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_COND_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:147: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_RWLOCK_INITIALIZER' /usr/include/pthread.h:157: warning: missing white space after `#define PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT' Here is the header from the pthread.h file: /* static char sccsid[] = "@(#)15 1.32.2.32 src/bos/usr/ccs/lib/libpthreads/pthread.h, libpth, bos43R 11/24/99 12:02:08"; */ /* * COMPONENT_NAME: libpth * * FUNCTIONS: * * ORIGINS: 27, 71, 83 * * LEVEL 1, 5 Years Bull Confidential Information * * (c) Copyright 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 OPEN SOFTWARE FOUNDATION, INC. * ALL RIGHTS RESERVED * * OSF/1 1.2 */ I edited the pthread.h file to add white space to the indicated lines so that I could go further. Then I hit this warning: atmemmgr.cpp:1368: warning: format not a string literal, argument types not checked Here is the offending line from the source: fprintf(stderr,szBuf); Again, this compiles fine with gcc 2.95.2 on Linux. There doesn't seem to be any way to turn off this warning. What level is the compiler in this package? Since there is an Apache implementation delivered with AIX on the Expansion Pack, we will probably not ship a separate version with the Toolbox. We'll be adding words to that effect to the web page and do the README. If there is a compelling reason to ship a vanilla apache, we can certainly do that as well. We're working on PHP now. You can get the Apache implmentation from http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/download.html Marc > > good morning, > > i'm searching apache and php srm for aix > > i want to install it on my rs6000 computer > > how can i get it with installing instructions > > > thanks ! > > Gilles Walschaerts > -- Marc Stephenson IBM Server Group - Austin, TX Internet: ma...@au... It looks like that it is part of KDE 2.1, so we would be likely to have it when 2.1 goes stable. It wasn't included as part of the KDE 2.0.1 distribution. Dear AIX-Linux Affinity team : I have a question about KDE's development tools, hope it will not disturb too much ... Are there already ported [kdevelop] tool in AIX4.x version ? If there is, why can't I found in AIX-Toolbox directory ? If there is not, do you have plan for this package ? And when will be exist in AIX-Toolbox directory ? Thanks for the command line tip, Reza Arbab. Here is the error message returned. Hi, The following program (I am told) runs fine on Solaris and Linux. If compiled with IBM VisualAge for C++ v5 is works too on AIX 4.3.3! But with GNU gcc/g++/C++ it fails to complete most of the time. It uses pthreads and lots of C++ new/malloc calls. My customer regards this as a major weakness in AIX because they are heavily commited to GNU C++ for their core application and this bug will stop them buying IBM pSeries machines. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ #include <pthread.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <strings.h> #include <unistd.h> #define MAX_THREADS 100 #define ITERATIONS 3 #define SLEEPTIME 3 void *ThreadFunction(void *In) { int i, j; int val =(int) (int*) (In); for (i = 0; i < ITERATIONS; i ++) { char *hello = NULL; for (j = 1; j <= 1000; j ++) { char *newhello = new char[j + 1]; if (hello) { strcpy(newhello, hello); delete [ ] hello; } else newhello[0] = 0; char *newa = new char[2]; strcpy(newa, "A"); strcat(newhello, newa); delete [ ] newa; hello = newhello; } //printf("%s - %d\n", hello, val); if (hello) delete [ ] hello; sleep(SLEEPTIME); } printf("%d\n", val); return In; } main() { int i; int ret; pthread_t hThread[100]; pthread_attr_t attr; pthread_attr_init (&attr); pthread_attr_setscope (&attr, PTHREAD_SCOPE_PROCESS); printf("Starting\n"); for (i = 0; i < MAX_THREADS; i ++) { ret = pthread_create(&hThread[i], &attr, ThreadFunction, (void*)i); if (ret != 0) { printf("Could not create main thread : UNIX error %d\n", ret); return (-1); } } for (i = 0; i < MAX_THREADS; i ++) { pthread_join(hThread[i], NULL); } return 1; } +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The idebug debugger tells it crashes in pthread_mutexinit and a source code file called new2.cc - Eh!! thanks Nigel Griffiths IBM Technical Support (RS/6000) UK - e-mail: na...@uk... I've added a news item covering this information on the AIX Toolbox project page, but I don't know how well that reaches people just yet. There are a few few relatively new items in the Toolbox: mutt-1.2.5i A text mode mail user agent procmail-3.14 The procmail mail processing program a2ps-4.12 GNU a2ps is an Any to PostScript filter We're still having trouble getting timely updates to the web pages, so go directly to the ftp server to get these for now: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc You'll find subdirectories for mutt, procmail, and a2ps there. I'm adding the following section to the README.txt regarding this subject: Building against many libraries requires the use of run-time linking (-rtl) Due to cross-library codependencies, several of the libraries delivered with the Toolbox are built using run-time linking in order to allow the dependencies between libraries to be resolved at run-time. Some library references could not be resolved without employing run-time linking. When there is a shared object delivered with the toolbox which is not associated with a .a file, it is likely that it was built with run-time linking enabled. When you attempt to use one of these libraries you need to use the -rtl option to the linker (this is commonly enabled at the configure step by the use of LDFLAGS="-Wl,-brtl" for gcc, and LDFLAGS="-brtl" for vac/xlc. Unless you use -rtl, the linker will not search for the required .so files to resolve the shared object dependencies. The following packages were built using run-time linking technology: ORBit control-center enlightenment fnlib gdk-pixbuf gimp glade glib gnome-core gnome-libs gnome-pim gnome-print gnome-utils gnorpm gnotepad+ gnumeric gtk+ gtk-engines imlib kdeadmin kdebase kdegames kdegraphics kdelibs kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdepim kdesupport kdetoys kdeutils koffice libglade libgtop librep libtool mc ncftp rep-gtk rpm sawfish So, if you are trying to use glib or gtk+, you must use run-time linking to link your program. > > All, > > I've been working with the rpm packages and third party software > (balsa-1.1.1) and have noticed a couple of things.
