Hello everybody, Has anyone else observed any memory leaks in kmail? I've started using it today, to get easy-to-use filtering and sorting of my incoming mail. Anyway, this is what I'm seeing: If i select all messages in my inbox (approx 75 of them), and choose "Apply filters" the size of kmail grows from 8MB to about 50MB instantly. It does not seem to come down from there either. I haven't had a chance to observe any longer-term memory leaks (i.e. filtering of mail as they come in) since I started using it so recently. Otherwise I have to say that KDE2 works well. Some minor glitches, but nothing that stops productivity. Can I copy all the files from the CD onto a filing system and install from that filing system? If so, which directory in this new tree do I point smitty at? Thank you for your help. Regards Tim |

I think that this would be nice as well. Anybody care to contribute a patch? We haven't had any of those submitted to the project page yet. Nevertheless it would be very nice, if the KDE for AIX distribution would allow an ordinary user (not root) to go from the kdm login to a console login, like dtlogin allows. This is quite important on AIX, because it does not support multiple consoles as Linux [well, way back under AIX3 we had this with hft instead of lft, some of you might remember ... on the other hand I would not have been the one to port KDE to AIX3 ;-) ]. Probably one system has X11.samples.apps.clients installed and the other did not. There had been information in the README.txt file regarding the required installation of X11.samples.apps.clients (for the iceauth command, which KDE2 requires), but the README had inadvertently been overwritten recently and that information was missing. The dcopserver message usually is a result of the missing iceauth program. Good morning. I've installed KDE 2.x, and have been experiencing a small annoyance (I wouldn't really call it a bug...). On the inital KDE login screen (I replaced CDE with KDE on my system), where you can login, I have the following problem. When I want to shutdown/restart my system (or restart the X server), I click on the "Shutdown..." button, and the window pops up to select what to do. However, The "OK" button is always greyed out.. If I attempt to enter the root password to do any of these functions, it just enters what I type on the keyboard into the "Login:" field. Usually I just end up entering the system as root with a failsafe login, and do a "shutdown -Fr" from there. I believe this was working with KDE 1.x... Weird. Anyone have a built version of nmap that will work with AIX? I've attempted to use the once from Bull, but unfortunately it fails with an error to pcap_open_live (I did install the libpcap library for AIX from Bull..) attempting to work with the dlpi devices. I did build it from source as well, but get the same error. I'm trying to scan my own system for open ports (lsof: yuck), and can really only get a "nmap -P0 -sT localhost" working (however, I would like the full functionality..). Ethereal would rock, too. I'm having a few problems with xscreensaver under KDE 2.x as well - a few screensavers do not work (ie. Matrix, etc). Which is wierd, because if I run them under a normal xterm they work fine... Anyhow, that's my blabbering for today...<grin> Thanks. James H. Martens AIX Support Team (Boulder) IBM Global Services |

Hi all, we have problem using kghostview from the KDE2.0.1 package. If one calls kghostview file.ps from the command line, we get the following error: kdecore (KIconLoader): Theme tree: (KDE-LoColor) sw kghostview: ERROR: mimetype = text/plain For example in konquerer this file is correctly known as a application/postscript file type. Anybody tried this an succeeded? Or with PDF? It's the base operating system media - the ones that you install the system with. They will have volume labels, like volume 1, volume 2, etc. Just stick in the CD (any volume will work) but don't mount it. Use "smitty install_latest" to install. Select your CD device on the first panel, then either type in your selections (bos.adt X11.adt) or use F4 to select which filesets you want to install. The system will prompt you to put in the correct volume (which will probably be volume 2 for bos.adt). The docuementation CDs have no code on them. There are system installation sections in the documentation which give information on installing software on AIX using installp. The compiler is there on the FTP site. It is a pre-production version ("beta") and one of the requirements for releasing that version on the FTP site was to make sure that everyone read the README. There is a line in the README.txt (which was recently overwritten at the FTP site - I'll be fixing it shortly) which refers to the situation: ================================================================================ How to install the beta level of gcc and g++ included with the Toolbox See the README in the COMPILER directory: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/COMPILER/README The compiler is for AIX 4.3.3 systems ONLY and does not work on versions of AIX5L. ================================================================================ When the tools are released at a production level, we'll make RPMs for them Marc > > Hello, AIX toolbox for Linux Applications folks. > > I sent a message couple of weeks ago about availability of the GCC > compiler suite[0], but no know hasn't commented anything - is the > mailing list alive? > > [0] Because AIX toolbox web-pages advertise that GCC is available, yet > it doesn't seem to be (no link on pages and no *gcc* files in FTP > server. > > -- > Sami Laine tel +358 2 262 1143 > Auria Turun Puhelin Oy fax +358 2 2636 1143 > http://www.auria.fi/ mobile +358 50 500 1143 > email sam...@au... > > _______________________________________________ > aixtoolbox-list mailing list > aix...@os... > http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/mailman/listinfo/aixtoolbox-list > -- Marc Stephenson IBM Server Group - Austin, TX Internet: ma...@au... So, if we have the CDs for AIX, we will have the bos.adt.include fileset? Is that correct? Is it possible that AIX is packaged without it? I checked two documentation CDs looking for the AIX Base Application Development Toolkit but was unable to find it. Can you point me at the right CD to install from or, even better, the page on one of the documentation CDs describing how to install the AIX BADT? Or is there an ibm website which would have the documentation too? Regards Tim |

That's something that we need to add to the README. If you're going to install the GnuPro tools (gcc, g++, etc), then you need to have the application development support that comes with the base operating system media. That support isn't installed with AIX by default since it's not required in order to run the system in general, but it is included in every version of AIX (so "included" but not strictly "free"). The fileset that you would need for sure would be bos.adt.include. You'll need X11.adt.include for X11 support. There are other tools and files under the bos.adt and X11.adt umbrellas; if you have plenty of disk space, I'd install all of bos.adt and X11.adt from your AIX installation media. Hi there, I installed KDE 2.01. Once again, great work ! But I can't use the wallpaper function in the Look & Feel section. When I select an picture, only the first line will be shown. Thats all. Kview is working well, so the picture and the libraries seems to work well. And now an request, can you port Ethereal 0.8.15 and later ? I'm still looking for an good sniffer tool on AIX which works in an Token Ring network. The port from bull doesn't work with Token Ring network cards.
