I downloaded the latest and greatest versions of each. I installed RPM, When I try to install ImageMagick-5.2.0-1.aix4.3.ppc.rpm I get an error saying I need libttf.a. I cannot find this library. At first it said I needed libpng.a also. I downloaded this from http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html Where can I get a version of libttf.a? libtiff-3.5.5-2.aix4.3.ppc.rpm, but does not contain the proper library. If you have a self-contained C program with all portability issues internalized, then you might not have a need for the AIX Toolbox. On the other hand, if you developed your application on Linux assuming the presence of certain GNU/Linux tools (such as would be the case if you followed the GNU coding guidelines, for example), then there are utilities which are provided in the Toolbox which your application might need in order to build (autoconf, automake, libtool). If you packaged for Linux using RPM, that's in the Toolbox as well. The Toolbox contains many other things which have nothing to do with development (desktop managers, window managers, web tools, shells, editors) which people may find useful or interesting. If I have an object file compiled under AIX and it has no external dependencies (just a simple math algorithm), can I use this object file under linux running on the same machine? More specifically, are the object file formats compatible - can I link xcoff and elf under linux? Thanks, Dan |

Hello. I do not understand what you've build this AIX toolbox for Linux for. If I have C-code, it's easy to compile it on both platforms (okay, need to encapsulate one or two include files with #ifdef's and such things). And this would produce "native" AIX and Linux executables. But if I do not have C-code, the toolbox won't help me - or did I miss something? So what is it doing good for me? We're getting there. In the next couple of weeks we will be releasing new versions of a lot of things which will solve several problems, but cause a one-time headache. 1) We will be using the shared library ABI which libtool will be producing in the future. The libtool changes will increase the number of open source projects which will be able to produce shared libraries for AIX without modification to the Makefiles. 2) We will produce compatibility members in those archives to match the names of members currently referenced by the Bull freeware code. If we produce libfoo.a(libfoo.so.1), but they produce libfoo.a(shr.o), we will provide a load-only shr.o member which will import symbols from libfoo.so.1. This will significantly increase our compatibility with Bull's freeware, though I would expect them to migrate to the future shared library convention since that's what the sources will produce out of the box. 3) Where possible, we will provide our binaries built with the Visual Age C compiler, since that is still the better performing compiler on Power. The SPEC files will be structured to use the same compiler which we used if it is available, but fall through to gcc if vac is unavailable. We have to use g++ for C++ programs since the ABIs are incompatible between various C++ compilers (and even different versions of g++ are incompatible). 4) We will be providing RPMs for gcc, g++, gdb, and binutils for 4.3.3 and 5.1. The one-time headache will be that the new shared library structure will cause the existing RPMS and rpm.rte to be incompatible. Though it is possible to mix and match the ABIs through clever techniques, I'll probably recommend blasting away all of the installed RPMS and will provide a script to do just that. I can't apologize enough for the inconvenience that is going to cause. I'll pass along the request for a searchable archive to the developerworks people. It's a SourceForge-based system. Dear developers of AIX toolbox for Linux applications, I have installed the Linux tools on an AIX 4.3.3.7 server, and everything went smoothly !! We want to run our own application based on the Python language, so I installed your python packages. When we try to add packages to your Python, we run into a show-stopper problem: We want to install the Numerical Python package from http://sourceforge.net/projects/numpy which requires the Distutils package from http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/ at the Python 1.5.2 level (it's included in later Pythons). After installing Distutils, the installation of Numerical Python fails because your Python has been built using the GNU gcc compiler. We have been unable to find any way to configure the Distutils package to use the IBM C for AIX 5.0 compiler, which we use on AIX 4.3.3. The Python interpreter apparently insists on compiling with the same compiler that was used to compile Python itself, i.e., gcc. Question: Is it possible for IBM to solve this problem ? One might imagine 2 solutions: 1) Compile your Python RPMs using the IBM C compiler, or 2) provide an RPM containing the gcc-compiler that you have used. The version of xv which I use only has dependencies upon libc and libX11.a. Do you have a nonstandard libX11.a perhaps? xv is not yet included in the Toolbox (and may never be) because it is has unique terms and conditions which pushed it further down our stack, if not all the way off. It is not freeware and it has commercial restrictions. We might go after it someday, but it won't be real soon. Good chance that you can find it at the Bull or UCLA AIX freeware sites. I know that distributions include it, but we're being very careful here. > > I have installed the AIX version of the KDE desktop that you have > produced and am very happy with it. I have installed the AIX version of the KDE desktop that you have produced and am very happy with it. The only problem that I have noticed is that the xv program no longer works (it now does this: .../vesper/temp> xv X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major Opcode: 1 ) Is there any chance that you could package up an aix rpm for xv? (My attempt at building xv from the source convinced me that humility is far more important than I usually like to think). Many thanks... Al |

Of course, you're right. When I look on a RedHat 6.2 system, I don't find an actual definition for it anywhere under /usr/include, so I guess that we've attained our goal of Linux affinity there. :-) I see the definition of the structure in the RPM source in lib/header.c: struct headerToken { struct indexEntry *index; int indexUsed; int indexAlloced; int sorted; /*@refs@*/ int usageCount; }; You could probably report the problem to RedHat using bugzilla or the rpm-list mailing list. I assume you are refering to the following line. typedef /*@abstract@*/ /*@refcounted@*/ struct headerToken *Header; This line creates a typedef for Header that is a struct headerToken *, but cannot find where struct headerToken is defined. It is not in my copy of /opt/freeware/include/rpm/header.h. TIA, - Mike Marc Stephenson <ma...@au...> on 03/26/2001 10:55:37 AM Please respond to ma...@au... To: Michael J. Sure. It's in rpm-devel. Look in /opt/freeware/include/rpm/header.h (or equivalently /usr/include/rpm/header.h). Marc > > > > > I'm trying to build a tool I wrote for rpm-3.0.5. I'm trying to build a tool I wrote for rpm-3.0.5. The tool uses the Header typdef which is defined as a struct headerToken*. The problem is that struct headerToken is not defined anywhere that I can find in rpm-3.0.5-10, rpm-build-3.0.5-10, rpm-devel-3.0.5-10, popt-1.5-10, bzip2-1.0.1-3, db-2.7.7-1, zlib-1.1.3-7, or zlib-devel-1.1.3-7. Can anyone help me track this one down? TIA, - Mike |

Hi Folks, I have been trying, with little sucess, to compile the PyGTK bindings using the AIX Toolbox on AIX v4.3.3 maint level 7. I have read your comments at the back of the README document concerning run-time linking, but I am having no sucess during the 'make' process - it appears as though the 'libttool' component fails to pick up the linker attributes. If I attempt to use the following, I can get a shared module which is recognizable by python, but I get a segmentation violation core dump trying to run it. ld-so-aix gcc -Wl,-brtl -lglib -lgtk -lgdk -lgthread The question is, am I doing something wrong here, (other than spending too much time trying to get linux code running on AIX), or is there a dynamic linker limitation?? Otherwise, does anybody at Austin have a working version of PyGTK, please??? Thanks. |
