    The Ballerina programming language

    The Ballerina programming language

    The Ballerina Programming Language

Ballerina is an open-source programming language for the cloud that makes it easier to use, combine, and create network services. Network primitives in the language make it simpler to write services and run them in the cloud. Structural types with support for openness are used both for static typing within a program and for describing service interfaces. Type-safe, declarative processing of JSON, XML, and tabular data with language-integrated queries. Explicit error handling, static types, and concurrency safety, combined with a familiar, readable syntax make programs reliable and maintainable. Easy and efficient concurrency with sequence diagrams and language-managed threads without the complexity of asynchronous functions. Programs have both a textual syntax and an equivalent graphical form based on sequence diagrams.

    The CUE Data Constraint Language

    The CUE Data Constraint Language

The home of the CUE language. Validate and define text-based config

CUE is an open source data constraint language which aims to simplify tasks involving defining and using data. CUE merges the notion of schema and data. The same CUE definition can simultaneously be used for validating data and act as a template to reduce boilerplate. Schema definition is enriched with fine-grained value definitions and default values. At the same time, data can be simplified by removing values implied by such detailed definitions. The merging of these two concepts enables many tasks to be handled in a principled way. The CUE scripting layer defines declarative scripting, expressed in CUE, on top of data. This solves three problems: working around the closedness of CUE definitions (we say CUE is hermetic), providing an easy way to share common scripts and workflows for using data, and giving CUE the knowledge of how data is used to optimize validation.

    The Futhark Programming Language

    The Futhark Programming Language

    A data-parallel functional programming language

Futhark is a small programming language designed to be compiled into efficient parallel code. It is a statically typed, data-parallel, and purely functional array language in the ML family, and comes with a heavily optimizing ahead-of-time compiler that presently generates either GPU code via CUDA and OpenCL, or multi-threaded CPU code. Futhark is not designed for graphics programming, but can instead use the compute power of the GPU to accelerate data-parallel array computations. The language supports regular nested data-parallelism, as well as a form of imperative-style in-place modification of arrays, while still preserving the purity of the language via the use of a uniqueness type system. While the Futhark language and compiler is an ongoing research project, it is quite usable for real programming and can compile nontrivial programs which then run on real machines at high speed.

    Tidal

    Tidal

    Pattern language

Tidal Cycles (or just Tidal for short) is software for making patterns with code, whether live coding music at algoraves or composing in the studio. It includes a simple and flexible notation for rhythmic sequences and an extensive library of patterning functions for combining and transforming them. This allows you to quickly create complex patterns from simple ingredients. By default, sound is made with the featureful SuperDirt synth/sampler, but you can control other synths using Open Sound Control (OSC) or MIDI. Whether you're using SuperDirt or a synth, every filter and effect can be manipulated independently with Tidal patterns. Tidal is embedded in the Haskell language, although you don't have to learn Haskell to learn Tidal. You can learn Tidal through experimentation and play, most Tidal coders have little or no experience in software engineering.

    Tachyon Forth

    Tachyon Forth

A fast compact commercial quality Forth for embedded MCUs

Tachyon was originally developed for the Parallax Propeller 8-core MCU because I need to do more and faster, and within the the limited memory, in order to produce firmware for my commercial embedded hardware products. When the much vaunted successor, the P2 was introduced, then Tachyon was upgraded and also built into the P2 ROM as TAQOZ. Source code can be sent or pasted from the PC terminal at high speed (921,600 default) without any terminal delays and compiled into RAM ready for backup into SD or Flash. TAQOZ RELOADED, the full version of Tachyon for the P2 can be booted from SD cards or Flash and has all the tools needed to develop and test code interactively on the target MCU. Please browse the wiki pages for howtos and information on all matters regarding Tachyon/TAQOZ and the P1 and P2. There's even a Tachyon layer that runs on Mecrisp on the RP2040 too and now the ESP32-C3 as TachyonESP which uses the Arduino IDE to build the kernel.

    Bend

    Bend

A massively parallel, high-level programming language

Bend is an interactive programming environment (REPL) built on top of the Kotlin language, designed to allow users to explore, experiment, and learn Kotlin in a live, feedback-driven manner. The tool lets you define variables, functions, or values at the prompt and iteratively refine them—immediately seeing output and types—while preserving state across commands. It emphasizes discoverability and experimentation: users can inspect functions, call them on sample inputs, and evolve logic without a full project scaffold. Because it’s embedded in a graphical or console interface, Bend aims to reduce the friction of switching between editor and runtime when prototyping or debugging ideas in Kotlin. It can also be extended with libraries or domain-specific tools, making it a flexible playground for domain scripting, education, or data exploration.

    Checked C

    Checked C

Checked C is an extension to C that lets programmers write C code

Checked C is an extension to C that lets programmers write C code that is guaranteed by the compiler to be type-safe. The goal is to let people easily make their existing C code type-safe and eliminate entire classes of errors. Checked C does not address use-after-free errors. Checked C adds static and dynamic checking to C to detect or prevent common programming errors such as buffer overruns and out-of-bounds memory accesses. The goal of the project is to improve systems programming by making fundamental improvements to C. This repo contains sample code, the extension specification, and test code. The Checked C project is extending the C programming language so that programmers can write more secure and reliable C programs. The project is developing an extension to C called Checked C that adds checking to C to detect or prevent common programming errors such as buffer overruns, out-of-bounds memory accesses, and incorrect type casts.

    Curv

    Curv

A language for making art using mathematics

Curv is a programming language for creating art using mathematics. It's a 2D and 3D geometric modelling tool that supports full colour, animation and 3D printing. Curv is a simple, powerful, dynamically typed, pure functional programming language. Curv is easy to use for beginners. It has a standard library of predefined geometric shapes, plus operators for transforming and combining shapes. These can be plugged together like Lego to make 2D and 3D models. Coloured shapes are represented using Function Representation (F-Rep). They can be infinitely detailed, infinitely large, and any shape or colour pattern that can be described using mathematics can be represented exactly. Curv exposes the full power of F-Rep programming to experts. The standard geometry library is written entirely in Curv. Many of the demos seen on shadertoy.com can be reproduced in Curv, using shorter, simpler programs. Experts can package techniques used on shadertoy as high-level operations for use by beginners.

    Gravity language

    Gravity Programming Language

Gravity is a powerful, dynamically typed, lightweight, embeddable programming language written in C without any external dependencies (except for stdlib). It is a class-based concurrent scripting language with modern Swift-like syntax. Gravity supports procedural programming, object-oriented programming, functional programming, and data-driven programming. Thanks to special built-in methods, it can also be used as a prototype-based programming language. Gravity has been developed from scratch for the Creo project in order to offer an easy way to write portable code for the iOS and Android platforms. It is written in portable C code that can be compiled on any platform using a C99 compiler. The VM code is about 4K lines long, the multipass compiler code is about 7K lines and the shared code is about 3K lines long. The compiler and virtual machine combined add less than 200KB to the executable on a 64-bit system.

    Ravi Programming Language

    Ravi Programming Language

Ravi is a dialect of Lua, featuring limited optional static typing

Ravi Programming Language is a derivative of Lua 5.3 with limited optional static typing and MIR-based JIT compiler. Ravi is a derivative/dialect of Lua with limited optional static typing and JIT/AOT compilers. The name Ravi comes from the Sanskrit word for the Sun. Lua is perfect as a small embeddable dynamic language so why a derivative? Ravi extends Lua with static typing for greater performance under JIT compilation. However, static typing is optional and therefore Lua 5.3 programs are also valid Ravi programs. There are other attempts to add static typing to Lua (e.g. Typed Lua but these efforts are mostly about adding static type checks in the language while leaving the VM unmodified. So the static typing is to aid programming in the large - the code is eventually translated to standard Lua and executed in the unmodified Lua VM.

    Skylark

    Skylark

Skylark in Go: the Skylark configuration language

Skylark, now known as Starlark, is an interpreter for a Python-like language implemented in Go. It is designed as a lightweight, deterministic, and embeddable configuration and scripting language ideal for use within larger applications. Skylark maintains Python’s familiar syntax and high-level data types while omitting features that could cause nondeterminism, such as concurrency and dynamic module imports. The interpreter supports first-class functions, dictionaries, lists, and comprehensions, allowing developers to define reusable logic and structured configuration data. Originally developed for Bazel, Google’s build tool, Skylark enables users to define build rules and macros that extend system functionality. Because it runs deterministically and isolates execution from system state, it’s well-suited for reproducible build systems and other sandboxed environments. The Go implementation focuses on parallel scalability and easy integration into Go-based projects.

    SpinalHDL

    SpinalHDL

    Scala based HDL

SpinalHDL is a hardware description (HDL) framework embedded in Scala, enabling hardware designers to build digital circuits with modern programming abstractions. Instead of writing in Verilog or VHDL directly, users describe hardware components and their interconnects using Scala code and Spinal’s domain-specific library, which then emits synthesizable hardware (e.g. as Verilog). Because SpinalHDL is embedded in Scala, it allows reuse of functional abstractions, parameterization, modular composition, and higher-level constructs to manage complexity. It supports building systems at various levels—single modules, pipelines, memories, controllers, etc.—while letting the designer control timing, pipelining, and resource sharing explicitly. The generated hardware can be synthesized for FPGAs or ASIC flows, making it practical for real designs.

    Unison

    Unison

A friendly programming language from the future

Unison is an open source functional programming language based on a simple idea with big implications: code is content-addressed and immutable. Unison’s core idea is that code is immutable and identified by its content. This lets us reimagine many aspects of how a programming language works. We simplify codebase management, Unison has no builds, no dependency conflicts, and renaming things is trivial. The same core idea forms the basis for a runtime that robustly supports dynamic code deployment, allowing a single Unison program to describe entire elastic distributed systems. Though a lot of the work on Unison is still experimental and ongoing, we’re sharing an early alpha release of the language for you to test out. We’ll make a more finished release generally available soon. In the meantime, anyone is welcome to help with alpha testing.

    Wasp

    Wasp

A programming language that understands what a web app is

Wasp (Web Application Specification Language) is a declarative DSL (domain-specific language) for developing, building and deploying modern full-stack web apps with less code. Concepts such as app, page, user, login, frontend, production, etc. are baked into the language, bringing a new level of expressiveness and allowing you to get more work done with fewer lines of code. While describing high-level features with Wasp, you still write the rest of your logic in your favorite technologies (currently React, NodeJS, Prisma). Wasp is in alpha and is therefore likely to change a lot, have bugs and miss important features. Due to its expressiveness, you can create and deploy a production-ready web app from scratch with very few lines of concise, consistent, declarative code. When you need more control than Wasp offers, you can write code in existing technologies such as js/html/css/... and combine it with Wasp code!

    gluon

    gluon

A static, type inferred and embeddable language written in Rust

Gluon is a static, type inferred and embeddable language written in Rust. Gluon is a small, statically-typed, functional programming language designed for application embedding. Static typing makes it easier to write safe and efficient interfaces between gluon and the host application. Type inference ensures that types rarely have to be written explicitly giving all the benefits of static types with none of the typing. Marshalling values to and from gluon requires next to no boilerplate, allowing functions defined in Rust to be directly passed to gluon. Gluon supports Unicode out of the box with utf-8 encoded strings and Unicode codepoints as characters. Gluon is a garbage-collected language but uses a separate heap for each executing gluon thread. This keeps each heap small, reducing the overhead of the garbage collector. Gluon is written in Rust, which guarantees thread safety. Gluon keeps the same guarantees, allowing multiple gluon programs to run in parallel.

    stylus

Expressive, robust, feature-rich CSS language built for nodejs

Stylus is a revolutionary new language, providing an efficient, dynamic, and expressive way to generate CSS. Supporting both an indented syntax and regular CSS style. Installing Stylus is very easy once you have Node.js. So get the binaries for your platform and make sure that they also include npm, Node’s package manager. Stylus features powerful in-language function definitions. Function definitions appear identical to mixins; however, functions may return a value. Optional arguments may default to a given expression. With Stylus we may even default arguments to earlier arguments! Stylus is an innovative stylesheet language that compiles down to CSS. Inspired by SASS, Stylus is built with node.js and capable of running in the browser. Stylus is “pythonic” (i.e. indentation-based). Whitespace is significant, so we substitute { and } with an indent, and an outdent. Stylus, just like CSS, allows you to define properties for several selectors at once through comma separation.
