Help Wanted: Syslog for Windows, AutoREALM, FreeSMS

By Community Team

Since we started doing these Help Wanted blog posts, the response has been overwhelming. I’m really excited about dormant projects coming back to life with new developers and new ideas.

If your project is looking for developers, please email us, and we’ll do what we can to help you find them.

If you’re interested in working on any of these projects, let us know. It’s useful to tell us about what other projects you’ve worked on, and about your ideas for the project that you want to work on. We’re not going to turn over the reins to the first person that comes along, so convince us that you’re the right person for the job.

Here’s the latest batch of projects that are looking for a breath of fresh air.

  • Syslog for windows

The syslog-win32 project provides a syslog server and client for Microsoft Windows. The developer on this project, however, has moved away from developing for Windows, and so no longer has the time or inclination to work on this. If you’ve done much time administering Windows servers, you know how valuable a logging service can be, to augment the built-in reporting mechanisms. If you’re interested in working on this project, or in taking over maintenance of it, email us and we’ll set you up.

  • AutoREALM

AutoREALM is a free role-playing game mapping program originally made by Andrew Gryc. This program is an excellent mapping program that can design castles, caves, cities, dungeons and more. New developers are more than welcome!

The project may appear inactive, but there’s a variety of work going on, and they need help. Although the original development was in Delphi, it’s being rewritten in C++, OpenGL and WxWidgets. If you have experience in any or all of these technologies, I’d be glad to make the necessary introductions. There’s lots to do.

  • FreeSMS (Free Student Management System)

FreeSMS is a PHP based application to manage an educational facility of teachers and students alike. It is a teacher and student management system providing marketing, registration, course management, attendance and a student evaluation system.

There are numerous open feature requests on this project, and the lead developer, Bogdan Cristea, is anxious to have help implementing them. The code is written in PHP.

If your project is interested in attracting new developers, or if you’re a developer looking for something to work on, please get in touch. I’m glad to play matchmaker. Few things please me more than seeing an inactive Open Source project start producing code again.

SMS has also been used by a number of television networks and corporations to encourage consumers to interact with a product. Some television competition programs, for example, allow viewers to vote for their favorite participants via text.
