Snapshot: What this tool is
Folder Painter is a small desktop personalization utility from Sordum, a developer known for a variety of Windows utilities (for example, Mouse Settings Changer). It lets you assign different colors and custom icons to folders in File Explorer so they stand out from the standard yellow. The app supports current Windows builds, including Windows 11.
What you can do with Folder Painter
- Apply a custom icon and color to any folder to make it easier to find.
- Restore a folder to the original system icon when you no longer want the customization.
- Install multiple icon packs (the program ships with a few by default and additional packs are available for download).
How the context-menu workflow operates
Folder Painter does not open a separate window; instead, it integrates into File Explorer’s right-click menu. The selection dialog you use is split into two areas — the area on the right provides various icon settings you can tweak, while the opposite side shows available icons and previews of color and style.
- Right-click a folder in Explorer to open the context menu and choose the Folder Painter entry.
- Choose an icon pack and preview the color/design you want to apply.
- Adjust any icon-specific options in the settings area, then confirm to change the folder’s appearance.
Managing icon packs and menus
The program includes several icon packages out of the box and offers many more for download (up to a larger collection). Because Windows limits the number of items that can appear in a single context menu, Folder Painter can install additional submenus so you can access more packs.
- Rename each submenu with a custom label using the Context Menu Name field so different packs are easy to tell apart.
- Install one or more of the provided context-menu groups; each group corresponds to an icon pack and helps avoid hitting Windows’ per-menu item limit.
Undoing a change
- To revert a folder to the system default, right-click it, open the Folder Painter submenu, and pick the “Use default folder icon” option.
Why it’s useful
Windows doesn’t include built-in controls for coloring folders, so Folder Painter provides a simple way to organize visually. Custom colors and icons speed up navigation, letting you spot important folders at a glance while adding a touch of personalization to your desktop.
