IconsExtract for Windows

Purpose and scope

IconsExtract is a small utility that finds and exports icon images stored inside executable and library files on your system. It reads icon resources from files that act as icon libraries (for example EXE, DLL, OCX and CPL) and lets you save or copy those images for use in other programs.

Key capabilities

• Scan currently running processes and extract icons directly from active applications.
• Process single files or examine entire folders to collect every icon found.
• Apply filters to limit results by icon size and color depth.
• Read from common icon-containing file types (EXE, DLL, OCX, CPL, etc.).
• Operate without installation — the program runs as a portable executable and uses a simple, self-explanatory interface.

How to use

• Launch the program (no installation required).
• Option A: Point the tool at a specific file you want to inspect.
• Option B: Select a folder to scan and allow it to enumerate all eligible files.
• Or choose one of the currently running processes to pull its embedded icons.
• Configure optional filters (desired pixel dimensions and color depth) to narrow results.
• Start the scan, then either save selected icons to ICO files or copy them to the clipboard for immediate use.

Known limitations and tips

• When using the built-in Save function you may sometimes get only the smallest available icon version (for example 16×16). However, copying the icon to the clipboard can provide a larger variant (e.g., 48×48), which you can paste into an image editor and save at that size.
• If you need a larger icon and the Save command returns only a tiny version, use the Copy-to-Clipboard feature as a workaround.

Recent addition

A new command-line option was added: -scanpath. This allows starting IconsExtract and telling it which base folder or wildcard to scan. Example: iconsext.exe -scanpath "C:\Windows"
