Briefly, Tux4Kids is participating in Google Summer of Code 2008. As a mentoring organization, Tux4Kids is to receive money from Google ($500 per student we've mentored, or $5500). Tux4Kids is not a non-profit organization, or part of any (such as OSEF) at this time. Therefore, one of us (most likely: me) would need to receive the money from Google, and redistribute it to the other mentors. This could impact that person's income tax. Software in the Public Interest (SPI) is a non-profit that's an umbrella organization for a number of mentoring organizations in this year's GSOC program (and has been in the past). As a non-profit, they're able to accept the mentor payments, and distribute them to the mentors of those organizations, without taking a tax hit. It appears that SPI is interested in Tux4Kids becoming a member project (other member projects of SPI include Debian, OpenOffice.org, Drupal, freedesktop.org, PostgreSQL and wxWidgets), and is willing to accept GSOC payment on our behalf this year. (They only ask that (1) they keep 5% of the mentor payment ($275) for administrative costs and (2) if we change our minds about becoming an SPI member project, we donate all of the money to SPI.) To all of you who consider yourself part of one or more of the projects currently under the 'Tux4Kids' umbrella ("Tux Paint", "Tux, of Math Command" and "Tux Typing II"), do you have any objection to this? At this point, I'm not sure who will be 'head' of Tux4Kids under SPI, but I'm more than happy to. I'm not 100% sure what SPI needs from us (e.g., in terms of structure of our member project's organization) but I've skimmed over their Bylaws and Cert. of Incorporation, and it seems a good fit to me.
