A new edtech podcast, Classroom Dynamics, interviewed me about the Tux Paint project last fall. I don't think I mentioned it here, but I see they've also put it up on their YouTube channel recently, so if you're interested here are links: https://classroomdynamics.wixsite.com/podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKqcCcG33ww Enjoy! -- -bill! As you're probably aware, Tux Paint has been available for Android for a few years now. It's been available as both a downloadable "APK" package, and in the F-Droid repository (a so-called "app store alternative") which contains open source software for Android. The latest version includes the entire Stamps collection, pre-bundled. More recently, it's also been made available (free of charge) in the Google Play Store. That leads me to the point of this email... For over a decade now, I've had people (especially parents and teachers) ask whether Tux Paint is available for Chromebooks (which run ChromeOS). Unfortunately, it has NOT ever been ported to that platform. It's certainly possible, we just haven't had anyone with the skill and experience put the effort into doing so (and maintaining it). However, in recent years, ChromeOS-based devices (like a random Dell(?) Chromebook I happen to have here for my son, have been able to install and run -- with varying degrees of success -- Android-based apps. (I was able to install it and give it a testdrive last night!) So, for anyone out here wishing Tux Paint would work on Chromebooks, you MIGHT be able to get it to work by installing it from the Google Play Store (free of charge, natrually)! Here's the direct link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tuxpaint.android Your mileage may vary. One common complaint we've seen by people who tried it out is that the mouse pointer disappears, which makes it basically impossible to use with a mouse/trackpad/etc. (It's fine if you've got a stylus or touch screen.) However, there is a setting in the mini "Tux Paint Config." that ships with Android that you can change to make sure the mouse remains visible. I've posted about that, and a few other Android- and ChromeOS-specific "gotchyas" over on the "Known Issues" page of the website: https://tuxpaint.org/docs/known_issues/ Enjoy, and please let us know if you have any issues. At the least, it will help us know what problems to focus on in the future, and/or be able to tell other users what will or won't work on Chromebooks. Thanks! PS - h/t to Pere for maintaining the Android build, and Terrence for managing the Google Play entry for Tux Paint! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Tux Paint 0.9.32 & friends are now available for Windows, macOS, Android [1], and Linux [2]. As noted when I posted about the beta release recently, the new version adds: * 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective drawing tools * Isometric, Dimetric, Trimetric, and Oblique drawing tools * Epitrochoid and Hypotrochoid ("Spirograph") drawing tools * A "complexity" setting that affects the behavior (or availability) of certain Magic tools * Reorganization of the Magic tools (no longer sorted by name) * Font face & size details, when using Text & Label tools Also, numerous bugs have been fixed, some localizations have been improved, and the glossary section of the Magic tool API technical documentation has been reformatted. The Stamps collection takes up much less space, thanks to reducing the quality levels of many sound files that were not benefitting it. Learn all about it! https://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.32-press-release.php Download it! https://tuxpaint.org/download/ And don't forget to tell your friends! :-) [1] Available for Andorid as a direct APK download, which includes both Tux Paint & all the stamps. Coming soon to the F-Droid app repository, and Google Play Store. (Thanks Pere & Terrence!) [2] Available for RHEL and other RPM-based Linux via a repository, and as direct package file downloads. (Thanks Shin-ichi!) Available for MANY Linux distros as a Flatpak via FlatHub. (Thanks Will!) PS - Thanks to Mark and Shin-ichi for the macOS and Windows builds, respectively. PPS - Probably coming soon for Haiku OS, and maybe also openSUSE Linux. -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Hello again, By this you mean the statement "3 7/10 times as big as the brush shape", correct? Exactly, that the brush increases or decreases in size and this is represented by fractions, which is difficult for the child to understand. On the translation issues, it is perfectly understandable. I hope to solve such issues soon. A beta release of Tux Paint 0.9.32 and friends (Tux Paint Config. and Tux Paint Stamps) is now available for Windows, macOS, RHEL Linux, and as source-code. https://tuxpaint.org/beta/ It introduces a number of new Magic tools for drawing 3D-style sketches (1-, 2-, and 3-Point Perspective, Isometric, Di- & Trimetric, and Oblique), and tools for creating Centered Trochoid roulette curves ("Spirograph"-style artwork). It also adds a "complexity" setting, allowing you to specify the expertise level of the user, which causes some of these new Magic tools to provide more simplified interfaces, or to be deactivated altogether. The Stamps collection's size has been greatly reduced (smaller download, and less disk space used when installed), by reducing the quality levels of many of the descriptive audio samples. (They did not need to be in stereo, especially if the sound was only on one channel, and they did not need extremely high sampling bitrates.) Font face & size details are shown in the information are at the bottom when using the Text and Label tools. And finally, a few translations were updated, and a number of bugs were fixed. We always appreciate beta testers, so please try it out and let us know if you come across any crash or freeze bugs, or other major problems. Thanks in advance! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Tux Paint attempts to organize fonts with the most useful appearing at the top of the list. This is done based on sample strings provided by a translator, and it appears that while there is some work done towards this goal in the Greek translation of Tux Paint, but there's probably more that could be done. These strings are often a point of confusion for translators, and I've been meaning to provide some thorough documentation to try and help. (In the meantime, the topic has come up numerous times on the mailing lists.) With time, I'm hoping things will improve on this front, both for Greek and other languages Tux Paint supports. Hello everyone, As a Greek user I have noticed the font issue multiple times and I find it very annoying as well. I also believe that young children who interact with this painting tool may feel confused when attempting to write a label or a text with these malfunctioned fonts. On the other hand, I agree that displaying the brush spacing via fractions is not something that is effective for children. A more childish and simple display could be illustrated for the brush spacing in order to enhance the comprehension. At long last (and with some amount of effort by Pere -- thanks, Pere!), Tux Paint 0.9.31, initially released back in July, is now available for Android. Along with all of the new features, bug fixes, etc. found in 0.9.31 overall (see https://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.31-press-release.php), this version differs from earlier Android versions in that it: 1. includes the entire Stamps collection 2. no longer requires Bluetooth access to run It is currently available as a direct APK download only, but should hopefully land in the F-Droid and Google Play app stores some time soon (Pere & Terrence, please let me know when they've landed, so I can update the webpage!) Get it here: https://tuxpaint.org/download/android/ Enjoy, and happy new year! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

I've been interviewing artists who use Tux Paint, to find out their backstory, how and why they use it, their favorite tools, what inspires their art, etc. They were done as a kind of Q&A over email. I've asked over a dozen people to participate, and so far 11 have agreed! Eight of them have sent their responses back already, and I've been posting them to the Tux Paint website once every day or so. (Three are live so far.) You can find them here. Check back now and then for new ones! https://tuxpaint.org/interviews/ -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

A new Android build has been created, which corrects this (and also brings back Blocks, Chalk, and Drip, which were also missing): https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxpaint/files/tuxpaint/0.9.29-beta/org.tuxpaint_9287-2.apk/download This issue didn't affect all Android devices. -bill! |

Another follow-up: I tested on my son's Windows 10 laptop, and when using the scrollwheel (on his physical, external mouse), the selector (brushes, magic tools were what I tested) does not scroll properly. It seems to jump immediately, and get basically stuck at, the bottom. I have been unable to replicate this on Linux, however! I confirmed that the scroll wheel acts as intended when using the New dialog, and in other apps (e.g. a web browser), so it doesn't appear to be a driver or hardware malfunction, but specific to that bit of code in Tux Paint. I'll investigate. Can others out here with physical mice (or trackpads that offer scroll functionality) please give it a try, and see whether it's acting incorrectly for you as well? Thanks! -bill! Quick follow-up: The Android version (at least on my Pixel 7 phone) is not showing the new "Kaleido-..." Magic tools. I'll post a follow-up once we get that sorted. -bill! Tux Paint 0.9.28 has been rebuilt as 0.9.28-3 for Red Hat Linux, too. (For EL7, EL8, and EL9; the SDL2.0 variation of Tux Paint. Note: SDL2_Pango has also been updated.) Learn about Shin-ichi's repository, or directly download the RPM package files, at: https://tuxpaint.org/download/linux-rpm/ Tux Paint 0.9.28 is also being updated in Fedora Linux (now at 0.9.28-4). Learn more at: https://tuxpaint.org/download/linux-fedora/ Similar to the Windows and Android builds late last month, these updates apply a patch to mend a crash bug affecting the Fill tool's 'Brush' or 'Radial' modes if you drew off the canvas. Thanks to Shin-ichi TOYAMA here in our project, and Gwyn Ciesla from The Fedora Project, for these builds! -bill! |

Tux Paint 0.9.28 has been rebuilt for Android as well. It's available in F-Droid, and as a direct ".apk" download. Lean more here: https://tuxpaint.org/download/android/ As with the Windows builds the other day, this applies two patches: one mends a crash bug affecting the Fill tool's 'Brush' mode; if you drew off the canvas, it could crash; the other addresses jaggedness that can occur when running Tux Paint in fullscreen mode. Thanks to Pere Pujal i Carabantes for handling this. -bill! |

We actually discovered this recently, and Tux Paint 0.9.28-3 for Windows (and coming soon for Android) addresses this bug. You can download it from the usual place (https://tuxpaint.org/download/) Happy new year! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Issue reproduces stably, though I'm not 100% clear the minimal step. 1. open a new blank board(white background) 2. select floodfill on the left, and Brush on the top right. 3. select color 1(e.g. black), 4. move mouse rapidly, randomly, as if trying to fill the erea 5. select another color(e.g. red), redo step 4 6. redo step 3~5 in about 1 or 2 minutes, tuxpaint freezes and crashes. version 0.9.28, os win11 x64 |
