In addition to this, I usually have ghostscript somewhere down the pipeline turning postscript into whatever the printer happens to support (unless, of course, it supports postscript). Unless you did something rather funny, all programs under your unixish system should emit postscript to talk to your printer... To give a real-live example: For a while now, a client had three Lexmark3200 printers (cheap pos), and was using windows clients and windows terminal services. Redirection would work sporadically, but always- if it did work- it would take 15-20 minutes before anything came out. The reason? The software doing the printing makes the printer output in the format that the printer likes, and never some intermediate format that another machine will like (that's not entirely true- Windows has "print filters" but most print drivers either only support plain-text or RAW) So a document, which we'd find could be reduced to a 14k postscript document was getting expanded into a 12MEG document for the lexmark- then transported over a 256k link, to the internet, and over to a 160k~ link, and with three people trying to print, that means no bandwidth left :/ So my solution has been (and likely always will be) to tell Windows all my printers are Apple Laserwriters of some kind, and just let ghostscript handle it.
