It is intended that you can replace these with square brackets [] but these are only changed back to round brackets if math mode is activated which is why the 0+ at the start is required. There are several possible fixes including stopping round brackets from activating math mode and allowing square brackets to activate maths mode. However these would affect the core of the export handler code and I think that would be too risky for a quick fix prod release.
