I am inclined to attribute this (possibility) to the fact that there is no specific distribution primarily oriented around f77 compilations using Mingw version of gcc-f77. I do know that the compiler (fortran) has entirely different requirements than does the mingw compiler (gcc/g++). Chances are good that the libbfd distribution works just fine with Mingw, but is incompatible with F77 compile/linking. Again, this is largely deduction and speculation. However, indicators do point to this sort of situation as the root cause of the problem with libbfd _not_ working with fortran compiles.
