I'll second Keith's suggestion.
I was unable to build GMP on an older version of MSYS. I can no longer 
recall the errors I received, or the exact version of the MSYS shell (but it 
wasn't all *that* old).

 Anyway, the problem went away when I updated to 1.0.10.
