Possibly, subject to Roger granting permission.

Ideally, I'd like him to submit a patch, via the project patch tracker,
and accompanied by a properly formatted ChangeLog entry.

Meanwhile, you could provide the replacement functions, based on Roger's
suggested code, as part of your package set, and use AC_REPLACE_FUNCS or
some equivalent configure script logic to activate building them.
