In order to build gfortran, the gcc build makes gcc35. Thus, the --enable-languages=f95 option configure option builds both gcc and gfortran. It is natural, therefore, to offer them together, as the Cygwin version at http://f77.syslinknet.com . However, it is possible to separate the gfortran components and libgfortran plus libgfortranbegin are sufficient to build f95 programmes. I did this to complete a Tru64 build of gfortran, where install was not available. Linkage to libraries built with earlier versions of gcc seems to be OK, under Cygwin at least.
