Ahah - thanks the gcc docs are wrong then. What do you mean 'long'? 
With a lot of output? Having come back to linux/unix/command-line 
after a long break I have noticed a number of options in many utilities 
with a -- prefix, can you explain the logic of using -- rather than 
- for some options?
