A new user does't alway know if a problem is mingw or gcc or msvcrt.dll specific or a generic language mistake. A simple response like "It is a good idea to use -Wall switch when compiling" or "Try gcc -v --help" often is enough. We've all been there. If a users suspect that their query may be off-topic, it would be nice if they flagged it as [OT] or [C-lang] or even [Maybe-OT] in subject line. In time some convention could catch on.
