I just tried this: turned soft tabs off, then in the Search And Replace dialog, turned Regular Expressions on, and searched for "\|" and replaced with "\t" (minus the quotes). And it replaced pipe characters with tabs. The pipe character has special meaning in regexes, so you have to escape it with a backslash.
