Category: None Group: None Status: Closed Resolution: Works For Me Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Kazutoshi Satoda (k_satoda) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Memory leaks by changing the display mode Initial Comment: In Windows XP, when the display mode is changed, size of Java heap memory increase about 5-10 MB. Repeating the change leads to OutOfMemory exception. This was found on a machine which uses a screen saver which changes the display mode on start up (and restores it on returning to desktop). This problem is reproducable in jEdit trunk r7505. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Kazutoshi Satoda (k_satoda) Date: 2007-08-04 21:51 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1483238 Originator: YES I verified that this no longer happens with r10282 and JDK 6u2. It was likely the following bug in JRE 5 which was fixed in JRE 6. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6209673 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Matthieu Casanova (kpouer) Date: 2007-08-03 05:48 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=285591 Originator: NO Hi, I tried to switch from 32bits to 16 bits depth color) monitoring jEdit with a profiler, and I cannot reproduce your bug, and there is no new org.gjt.sp.jedit instance. I tried 3 or 4 times without memory increase. Could you try if it still happens ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kazutoshi Satoda (k_satoda) Date: 2006-10-21 15:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1483238 I'm using JRE 1.5.0_08. I mean by "display mode" the modes such as the color depth or the screen resolusion. So I think editing modes is not related. I tried to look the problem you mentioned. I used [Utilities] > [Troubleshooting] > [Reload Edit Modes] with JVMStats plugin. But I couldn't see a memory leak. The used memory increases after reloading, but it can recover to same or less value by pressing [Collect garbage] 1-3 times. I think it's better to submit the problem as another bug with an actual reproduction recipe. I would like to see your patch committed in because I had seen that recursive IMPORTs made jEdit hang up. But unfortunately I scraped the actual mode file before thinking to submit it as a bug. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: daniel hahler (blueyed) Date: 2006-10-20 03:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=663176 I've experienced a similar/related problem, when reloading editing modes - jEdit seems to consume more memory each time until it hangs sometime. What Java version are you using? (I've experienced it with 1.5 and 1.6-beta2). Could you try the patch at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1572746&group_id=588&atid=300588 and see if it solves the problem, at least a bit? What exactly do you mean with "changing the display mode"? Going from e.g. "text" to "html"? This would not happen due to a screensaver, would it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100588&aid=1577203&group_id=588 |
