I just found out there was a discussion (and work being done on) the jEdit Launcher for Windows. I read the wiki and followup comments posted there as well. What I question is if Slava said 200k was huge for a launcher, how do you expect to get a Java to C/C++ compiler gizmo to get below that size? I do have some experience with Visual Studio, a lot of experience in C++, and a decent amount of Windows-specific developer knowledge (although a bit dated as I haven't done a lot of Windows-only coding for a few years). I also have access to all of Microsoft's developer tools as I have a MSDN Universal subscription (basically every CD Microsoft publishes). I am offering my services if there is still interest in a clean COM-based (and small) jEdit Launcher. I know that there is work already in progress by other devs so my feelings won't be hurt if this gcj thingie is what the jEdit team really wants. Subject: [ jEdit-devel ] A quick launcher update OK, a brief update:=20 I've been exchanging email with Brian on the launcher, and he came up with a really simple registry widget to avoid us needing a big COM hairball DLL to do right click integration. I've also started experimenting with gcj, to do compiles of Java down to a native Windows EXE. I think it should be possible to do a first cut of something that comes up, and tries to contact a running instance of JEdit with the file to be loaded. If JEdit isn't already up, it just launches it. The very first cuts would not have a pretty GUI front end for setting the launch parms. These would likely be picked up from a text file that could be edited. Eventually, a UI for configuration would be added.=20 The reader should be forewarned that the first revs of this will be beefy.=20 For simplicity, I've been doing static links of the gcj executable, and a "Hello, world" weighs in at 2 MB. This can be slimmed down, of course, and even at this weight, should provide a useful proof of concept and provide grist for the discussion mill.=20 So, anybody who's interested, please speak up here or on the wiki list.=20 Regards, whorfin ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by The 2004 JavaOne(SM) Conference Learn from the experts at JavaOne(SM), Sun's Worldwide Java Developer Conference, June 28 - July 1 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA REGISTER AND SAVE! http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf Priority Code NWMGYKND -- ----------------------------------------------- jEdit Developers' List jEd...@li... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/jedit-devel |
