Summary: selecting text often freezes application

Initial Comment:
I'm running jEdit 4.0 on Linux with this version of Java:

   Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 
   (build 1.4.0_02-b02)

JEdit will often completely hang following selection of
text in the text area. I select text, say, by pressing
shift then using the arrow keys, then the entire
application freezes. I have had this problem on three
different machines. It is keeping me from using jEdit
as my primary editor. This behavior is not consistent.
I can often select text with no problem, but it happens
often enough, maybe 10% or 15% of the time.
