Of course, it is less work to use one global flag in most cases. But in rare cases, a user may to use both cases in one plot. Then, a global flag is not possible. Or it could be a command similar to 'set pointsize' which takes effect immediately. For example, set pointsize 3 set style line 1 lt 1 pt 1 set pointsize 1 set style line 2 lt 1 pt 1 leads to different point sizes when using ls 1 resp. 2.
