It's not supported by libgd either. In fact the only general tool I found that supports it is ImageMagick. So we'd either have to roll our own, losing all the nice features of the libgd driver, or else try to compose single frames using libgd and then transfer the resulting data structures into libMagick as we build up the animation. And then you'd have the problem that almost nothing out there will play it back other than ImageMagick itself.
