It would be nice (and speed up game play for me) if the custom names used in place of the unnamed rivers, regions, mountains were retained from game to game - for example after the initial 10 region names have been discovered, I use a standard set that I keep in a text document, and I have to flip between it as I continue to explore the map - same for rivers and a lesser extent mountains.
Also, the history box displaying the list isn't selectable and able to be cut and paste for reviewing purposes - would be nice if it could be copied to a text file.
I recommend you just modify the FreeColMessages.properties file where the rive/mountain/etc names are stored.
No idea what to do about the cut and paste problem. That might be a Java limitation.
I have added some cities to the Dutch and English players list to bring their lists to 50.
There seems to be an inconsistency in the number of cities for each country and I always ran out with the out-of-the-box properties file.
Is there any sense about what the "right number" of cities would be.
I have not looked at the other named entities but I have run out of them in games as well. What would be the right number of rivers, lands and mountains to ensure that most players do not have to make them up on the fly?
I don't mind adding more if it would help.
Can I contribute what I have done?
The increased number of built-in names has reduced the need for this.

#163The increase in the number of names included in the system makes the
problem less severe.
It may also be that I am playing the game "wrong" and building too many
towns and exploring every inch of the map.

#163On reviewing this again I agree that having cut+paste work would be a worthwhile improvement. I remain unconvinced about the name issue.
Nothing wrong with that. FreeCol should be flexible enough to allow many playing styles. With <= 0.10.7 it is probably hard to defeat all the Europeans without exploring and either settling or patrolling the entire map.
I enjoy the building part of the game too much!
In the last game that I played, the Spanish never retired even though
they lost all of their colonies.
The Foreign Affairs report showed that they had no colonies and I could
not find any Spaniards wandering the map.
Do they have to also lose of their missionaries before they admit defeat?

#163Yes in 0.10.7. That was BR#2654, which was fixed in trunk on 20140129.
Thanks.
That explains the years of searching for a hidden colony or lone settler.

#163This, plus the ability to arbitrarily extend the name list by editing the properties file encourages me to close this request. However the more I play FreeCol the more sympathetic I am becoming to more of its text boxes being selectable, so I have added that to my TODO list for the next release.
