4Pane is a highly configurable Linux file manager. It has dual twin-panes, each of which has a directory tree-view pane and a detailed-list pane for files. Advanced features include undo/redo, archive management, multiple renaming and user-defined tools.

4Pane 5.0 has now been released. Apart from the usual bug-fixes, the main changes are:
- There is a simpler 'Find' dialog for everyday use.
Just as the QuickGrep dialog is good enough for most greps, a simple one-page QuickFind that sets just the path, pattern and search-type will be sufficient for most searches.
- When large files are being moved or pasted, their progress is now displayed in the statusbar.
- It is now possible to make a particular fileview order its files in a decimal-aware way.

4Pane: version 0.8.0 released

4Pane 0.8.0 has now been released. Apart from bug-fixes, the main changes are: there is now a menu item 'Permanently Delete', which really deletes rather than just moving to a can; the selected pane now subtly highlights its header, or the top of its toolbar, to indicate that it has focus; i18n-related improvements; there are now Italian and Danish translations provided.

Binaries are available here for the latest versions of Ubuntu, Debian, Mepis, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mandriva and Slackware. Packages for older versions of these distros, plus Gentoo/Sabayon, Zenwalk and Puppy, can be found at http://www.4pane.co.uk, which also has repositories for those distros that use them, and source and debug packages.

When mounting a removable device partition as root, 4Pane now attempts to give the user write permission.
You can now choose, when Moving/Pasting a relative symlink, for its original target not to be retained.

Release of 4Pane 0.5, a file manager for Linux

I'm pleased to announce the first file release of 4Pane, a four-pane detailed-list file manager for Linux, designed to be fully-featured without bloat. In addition to standard file manager things, it offers multiple undo and redo of most operations (including deletions), archive management including 'virtual browsing' inside archives, multiple renaming/duplication of files, a terminal emulator and user-defined tools.
