I believe the modified fade-in uses the square root of a linear ramp. Maybe even better would be a raised cosine, which is smooth at both ends and has the property that the fade-in and fade-out curves sum to 1. Also, there is a square root function in Nyquist that is more efficient than taking logs and exponents, but isn't available in older versions of Audacity.
