We have used Audacity in both Linux and Windows for many years to edit and clean up speech and music files. Versions 1.2.x do a superb job of removing noise. Unfortunately the noise removal algorithms have changed in versions 1.3.x and we have not succeeded to get it to work as well as it used to. We have also experienced problems with the program refusing to save changes, so we dropped back to 1.2.4. Grab it while you can.
