I am not sure I understand. Does the "packaging system" run every time Audacity is launched? Is it running constantly in the background doing some sort of automatic check already? If either of those are true then I agree with you Audacity does not need to have this feature compiled into the Linux version. Is this packaging system specific to Debian/Ubuntu or is it true for all of the versions of Linux upon which Audacity runs?
