Sound is processed and moved around in digital form. It must be sampled at more than double the highest frequency. If you look at preferences in Audacity, the sample rate should be 44100 hz. There should probably be a warning not to fiddle with the settings. Many recorders will sample at 10 khz which is fine for most natural sounds. Anyway, computer cards usually function up to 20 khz.
