From what I see in the current code, most network-transfer is text-based anyway. Therefore I propose making the standard network-message only contain a string (plus some other possibly), transmitted either with explicit length-field or with the string-typical zero-delimiter. This will save us some trouble because: - easier to debug - less code to debug We can use the same methods used for writing to disk to also write to a stringstream and later give the content to the networking-code for transfer. Later we can (have to) still provide specialized binary versions for the networking or compress the strings with a stream-compressor (someone mentioned that bzip2 was not the proper tool for that, anyone remember which lib would be better?). uli |
