Thanks for the info, Snaketails! Could you find out your
ALSA driver version?

People with Linux sound problems are still requested to
report here. Also positive examples welcome (no sound
problem on Linux).

Meanwhile I have heard slews of problems with ALSA sound
driver. You might try to download and install the latest
ALSA driver. Here are two threads that might help / not help:

We will offer a driver selection option in sound system
setup panel. I cannot promise that this will really help 
you though. 

** So the current recommendations are: **

a) use Windows
b) become a Linux driver expert in a 2 years study course
c) switch off sound in game ("/sound mute on")

Yes, it is on Linux
Sound System is ALSA with "hda-intel" Alsa Driver

The Sound chip as reported by ALSA Mixer is a Realtek ALC882

Java is sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.06
Linux Kernel is Linux shadow 2.6.14 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Oct
30 14:44:57 EST 2005 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz
GenuineIntel GNU/Linux


System Memory = 1G

This is a known problem and to current assumption caused by
inappropriate sound drivers. Please supply more information
about the computer environment you play with. In particular,
if it is Linux, what distribution and if possible what is
the default sound driver for the Java VM.

I am looking for reports (also from other people) about such
events giving the above details.

Also I am looking for a report about a Linux environment
which does NOT show the above problems. Thanks!
