It’s the easiest way to add parental and content filtering controls to every device in your home. Get OpenDNS up and running in your home quickly and easy. PhD in Computer Science not required. Thanks to our helpful guides and knowledge base, set up is a breeze. Blocks more than 7 million malicious domains and IPs while delivering high performance. Identifies more than 60 thousand new malicious destinations (domains, IPs, and URLs) daily. Our global network sustains over 620 billion DNS queries daily.

About

OpenText Core DNS Protection is a cloud-native security solution that monitors and filters every DNS request to block threats before they reach your users or devices. It prevents malware infections by stopping access to malicious domains and Command and Control servers, reducing the risk of data exfiltration. The platform offers full visibility into DNS activity through detailed logs, giving security teams greater insight into network behavior and potential vulnerabilities. With agent-level intelligence, it detects unauthorized DNS servers, enforces policy across encrypted DNS traffic, and eliminates DNS leaks in real time. Deployment takes only seconds, and protection applies on any network—whether employees are in the office, at home, or on public Wi-Fi. By acting as a DNS firewall, OpenText Core DNS Protection closes critical visibility gaps left by legacy tools and strengthens organizational resilience against modern cyber threats.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • OpenDNS is great for families or individuals who want to block unsavory content on their home network and keep younger members of their family safe while online. Is it perfect? No but it’s better than nothing. They have two free options the “family shield”. You put in the dns addresses in your router and reboot machines and you’re done. The second free product is OpenDNS Family and this can be customized in what you want it to block or or not. You do have to install the DNS Updater on a computer that’s always on so it can send IP Address updates to your account and keep blocking active. I’ve used this for years and love it.

Cons

  • Sadly, some ISP’s won’t allow you to change your DNS servers and so it can’t be used. This isn’t OpenDNS’s fault but the fault of the ISP.
