About

LinuxWays Core OS is a lightweight, minimal, highly customizable, Arch Linux–based operating system designed for Linux professionals, Platform Engineers, DevOps Engineers, system administrators, developers, security professionals, and Linux enthusiasts who want a clean, fast, transparent, and controllable Linux environment. LinuxWays Core is built around a simple philosophy: Minimal • Fast • Customizable • Keyboard-driven • Platform-focused Rather than attempting to provide every application and desktop component by default, LinuxWays Core starts with a carefully selected minimal foundation and allows users to build the environment they actually need. Project Vision LinuxWays Core OS is being developed as an independent Linux distribution project focused on giving experienced Linux users a powerful and transparent foundation for building their own working environments.

About

Scientific Linux is a Fermilab sponsored project. Our primary user base is within the High Energy and High Intensity Physics community. However, our users come from a wide variety of industries with various use cases all over the globe, and sometimes off of it! Scientific Linux is a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (property of Red Hat Inc NYSE:RHT). We informally call them “The Upstream Vendor” or “TUV”. Our references to TUV are intended to make it clear that Scientific Linux is in no way affiliated, supported, or sanctioned by upstream. By not using their name we hope to make this distinction as clear as possible. Provides a stable, scalable, and extensible operating system for scientific computing. Supports scientific research by providing methods and procedures for enabling the integration of scientific applications with the operating environment. Use the free exchange of ideas, designs, and implementations to prepare a computing platform for the next generation of computing.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Minimal & Lightweight — A small, clean Arch-based foundation with less unnecessary software and resource overhead. Fast & Responsive — Designed for quick boot times, low background activity, and efficient performance. Highly Customizable — Users can build their environment around Sway, i3, console workflows, or other preferred tools. Modern Linux Foundation — Built on Arch Linux, providing access to a large, continuously updated package ecosystem. Engineer-Focused — Particularly suitable for Linux professionals, DevOps engineers, developers, system administrators, and users who want control over their system.
  • LinuxWays Core OS has been lightning fast and provides an excellent experience for advanced Linux users. It is efficient, minimal, lightweight, and truly fast, without unnecessary bloat slowing the system down. The installation mirrors are convenient, workflows are smooth, and the overall system feels responsive and well organized. I also really like the availability of different desktop and window manager versions such as i3, Sway, KDE, and others, allowing users to choose an environment that fits their workflow and preferences.

Cons

  • Not Beginner-Friendly by Default — Its minimal philosophy can require more Linux knowledge than distributions such as Linux Mint or Ubuntu. Rolling-Release Maintenance — Arch-based updates can occasionally require manual intervention or troubleshooting.
  • Because LinuxWays Core OS focuses on being minimal and lightweight, some users may need to manually install and configure additional software depending on their requirements. This is less of an issue for experienced Linux users who prefer customizing their own environment. So, a good one distro for users being used to use Linux.
