About

Jotr is a local-first transcription app for Mac. Everything runs entirely on your device using Apple Silicon — no audio is ever uploaded, no account is required, and your recordings never leave your Mac. Drop in any audio or video file and get a raw transcript, a cleaned-up checked version, or a structured summary — all processed locally. Jotr supports MP3, MP4, MOV, M4A, WAV and more. Export to TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, or Word. Timestamp-linked playback lets you click any line to jump to that moment in the recording. Designed for meetings, lectures, interviews, podcasts, and video workflows. Free to use for transcription. One-time purchase unlocks local AI summaries and advanced exports. Requires macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon.

About

ToText is an app for transcribing and summarizing recordings, by Lovelace Loom. Record or import audio from meetings, lectures, interviews and voice notes, and get a searchable transcript with speaker labels, an AI summary, action items and tags. You can ask questions about a recording and get answers with timestamps that jump to the exact moment. It has strong Hebrew support, including mixed Hebrew-English speech, and transcribes many other languages. Transcription runs in the cloud. Export transcripts and summaries as PDF. Freemium.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The free tier is incredibly generous—recordings under 20 minutes are free to transcribe with no limits on the number of files. For my YouTube workflow, this is a lifesaver. I just drop my final cut into Jotr, and it generates perfectly time-aligned SRT/VTT files for upload. No manual syncing or separate tools needed. Also, since my company has strict privacy policies against uploading data to the cloud, Jotr’s 100% local processing is exactly what I needed. It handles everything on-device without compromising security.

Cons

  • It can be quite resource-heavy since it runs AI models locally, though the transcription speed is surprisingly good. While it supports many export formats, I’d love to see direct integration with Notion or Obsidian in the future. The AI summary feature is a nice addition but still feels like it's in beta—it works, but the real star here is the manual review workspace.
