About

Graphite is a free, open source alpha-stage vector and raster graphics editor that delivers a fully nondestructive editing workflow by combining layer-based compositing with a node-based procedural design engine. Starting life as a vector editor, Graphite has evolved into an all-in-one graphics toolbox built more like a game engine than a traditional creative app, wrapping its Rust-powered Graphene core in user-friendly tools for vector art, raster image editing, animation, page layout, motion graphics, and VFX compositing. Its hybrid editing paradigm uses a permanent node graph under the hood, enabling infinite scalability of effects such as boolean operations, procedural polka-dot patterns, and Mandelbrot fractals, while presenting artists with intuitive layer stacks and node-based layers. Available today as a lightweight offline web app, Graphite supports non-destructive workflows for magazine spreads, technical illustrations, and generative designs.

About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
