About

Adobe PDF Library is the only commercial PDF SDK built on Adobe Acrobat's own core engine, delivering the same rendering accuracy, PDF spec coverage, and behavior as Acrobat itself. Available in Modern C++, Adobe C/C++, .NET, .NET Framework, and Java, and supported on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Create, edit, merge, split, annotate, and watermark PDFs programmatically; convert to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A, PDF/X, and more; add OCR, digital signatures, redaction, and encryption; and process AcroForms and XFA forms. SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, with a 91% customer retention rate among enterprise users. For enterprise deployment, the pdfRest API Toolkit Container packages this technology as a self hosted REST API for on premises, private cloud, or hybrid environments. Datalogics also offers Scout, an AI assistant, and an MCP server so teams can bring PDF capabilities into AI powered workflows.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Very comprehensive set of APIs that allow the developer to create complex applications. The support has also been excellent.
  • A very high quality SDK for all things PDF. As I understand it, it's based on the same code that Adobe products (e.g. Acrobat) use for PDFs, with some additions. That makes it essentially the reference SDK for PDF. The included support can be very helpful. Can be used with C#, Java, and C++.
  • - It has one of the largest collections of PDFs. - There is a lot of variety for all the genres. - It has an easy and simple UI.
  • Adobe PDF library is a nice and fancy tool. It has a lot of options and choices to choose from. Recommended.
  • It makes it easy for managing documents. It offers files type conversion with a PDF reader. Very easy to use. Easy to create, edit documents and read large PDF files.

Cons

  • Because there are so many APIs, it takes a while to fully understand them and how they are used together.
  • It's for-pay closed-source software. Has a bit of a learning curve to get started, at least when used with C++. Probably not a good match for very small projects.
  • - The price of the software and PDFs is quite expensive.
  • I liked the platform so far. I don't have any cons as such.
  • It worked great for me. Nothing to share about cons.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Can't think of a better tool for this simple purpose of merging. There's an equally useful looking splitter function that I haven't used for a long time.
  • PDFsam is okay to edit files as long as standards compliance is not a priority. The edit features work fine.
  • It's like any other PDF software on the market. You need to pay a premium for electronic signatures and editing of all things.
  • -Very intuitive interface -It's very quick and easy to split or merge PDFs -No ads on the free version, they don't push for premium
  • Free and open source. Merge PDF files together. Split PDF file or extract pages. Multi platform availability.

Cons

  • Worried it'll convert itself into a subscription based app.
  • It is impossible to print properly. As an example, duplex printing just does not work, and PDFsam manages to mess this somehow by taking control of the print driver even if the printer is hard-set to duplex printing. The only working solution I found is to use a different program to print the pdf after editing it with PDFsam.
  • Buying a license is an absolute nightmare. They claim the license is $19.99 lifetime and as soon as you pay it turns into a subscription of $100 a year, no refunds. They start to add additional services randomly, and charge you, No customer service, I had to get my bank to put a stop payment, I had selected a basic plan and they had tacked on additional plans without my approval.
  • There are honestly no cons for me, PDFSam does what it must. It would be great if the converter tool would also be free, but I understand they have to make money somehow with premium.
  • No editing or conversion feature - available in PDFsam enhanced which is paid.
